Just looked at a post on FB (spelling errors not mine)

WARNING TO ALL DOG OWNER'S

WHO'S WATCHING YOU?
This is a factual statement from a a dog thief!

'How i find your dog, its easy i travel around my borough looking for signs in windows saying, springer lives here, bichon friese lives here, labrador lives here, etc etc etc.
i have stole dogs in 6 counties, i have watched owners walk there dogs and put them in there cars before stealing them'.

NOTICE TO ALL DOG OWNERS DO NOT ADVERTISE YOUR DOG IN YOUR WINDOW OR LEAVE YOUR DOG UNATTENDED ANYWHERE!

Your dog is your precious companion, please keep it safe.

I do carry dog's head stickers on my car (GSD) and we do have a dog's head painted on our house sign but you'd be pretty dumb to try and extract my dog from his car for one reason or another....any thoughts on the above?

Travel the country looking for signs on windows and doors - really? sounds a bonkers way of doing it. Go to any park and follow the owner would be simpler. Look up ads for puppies for sale on the KC website...many easier ways to find dogs.

Considering one of the best deterrents to burglars is to have a dog and put up a sign saying Beware of the Dog (or even pretend to have one by leaving a food bowl out); I think this is as true as plaited manes and plastic bags in trees.

If anyone's worried, just buy a huge 'I live here' sign with a picture of the meanest pooch you can find!

One Christmas a friend bought me one of these signs to put up in my window, its was the dopiest looking Dobermann Ive ever seen:D., needless to say I never used it. I do have a warning on the gate though it says caution please shut the gate, dogs running free. My dogs are never allowed in the garden unsupervised, they are walked regularly so dont need the garden for exercise.

We have a 'beware of the dogs' sign on the gate. None of our dogs are guard dog types! It works though, when people first visit us they park outside the gates after seeing the sign and ring us to come out.

I have a "GSDs running free" sign on the gate into the garden. It is down a long drive so can't be sign by the casual passer by, anyone near enough to read the sign would probably hear the dogs anyway, but the sign is there to stop people just walking in.

Well we had a visitor this afternoon, someone knocked on the back door, dogs barked , I went to see and it was a strange man. He said he had made a wrong turn and had come up the back drive(Its very obviously a farm track) and had spotted a land rover body and wanted to know if it was sale. I said you are very lucky, I was out there earlier with my 2 Dobes and they wouldnt have taken kindly to a strange man snooping about. He said forget it Im just asking and left, I ran through the house and opened the window slightly so as he went passed the window the Dobes had their heads out telling him they live here and to clear off. He might have been completely innocent but he might think twice before coming here again, I take security very seriously.

Well I'll be keeping the sign on my garden gate. I'm sure that if someone wants to find out where different dogs live to be able to steal them, there are easier and more "productive" ( :( ) ways to get that information, than through driving around at random looking for here lives so and so dog-signs.

*whispers* Although if someone did try and break into my home, after that they've barked to alert everyone, I wouldn't be surprised if my three bitches reaction was quite friendly... *

:D

That is an odd way of going about dog-thieving - would waste a lot of fuel!

There's a sign on a gate near us which is a picture of a rottweiler (they do have a rottie), it says "I can make this gate in 3 seconds. Can you?"

I guess it's not a dog 'warning' sign as such (there can be insurance implications with those as you are suggesting you know your dog is vicious so hence if someone was attacked they could sue you! Yep, I know - stupid!)

I dont have any signs on the house but then the dogs arent out at the front and arent in the passage when I open the front door, but if the sight of my two hanging over the top of the re-enforced baby gate with wooden batterns screwed across the top of it isnt enough to deter nothing will be, and if you happen to climb over the back fence by "accident", my mother in law will probably get you before the dogs :D On a serious note I did have a funny sign with a Bull Terrier on, but OH wouldnt let me put it up for this reason.

tbh even if you do have scary LOOKiNG dogs, it just takes one slightly smarter theif to do the job - my old mechanics dog was poisoned & then the place was burgled.
about a year ago locally someones dobe was nicked out of her car (I also know someone else with a dobe - who allowed a burgler to open up the car, reach in and grab her hand bag!!!!) ............
I bet my bottom dollar that if someone turned up where my horse is, and flung a chunk of meat at the gsd, they'd be able to take whatever they wanted. Fortunately there are cameras!

So my viewpoint now is that, unless I knew my dogs definitely would protect the property - and not allow a stranger in the house or near them - I wouldnt put any notice up at all anymore. I dont put dog signs on my car either!

no i dont - theft scares the hell out of me

my dogs are never left in the car alone/outside a shop (i used to rollock my dad for doign this)! or left anywhere

garden = supervised all the time....

its not worht the risk¬

both dogs are neutered and "worthless for breeding"...and anyone who asks about them who we dont know gets a list of their ailments (with a bit of added kidney problems and on meds which cost xxxx weekly ;) )

its very effective if you live in a built up area and are looking for specific breeds. We regularly have people turn up to ask about the 'dogs' I try not to advertise my breed, people know I have dogs they bark and you can hear them. Given the spat of dog thefts that are going on at the moment probably best not to advertise the fact.

Whats really annoying is I work my socks of to train my dogs and would be gutted if someone stole them. So many people stop and ask names, pet them etc etc you just don't know who your talking to.

We have a beware of the terrier and dogs running free, I dont advertise we have a bitch chihuhua.... :(

They might get a shock if they broke in and found a 45kg Fox Hound in the house lol

When he howls (rather than bark) when someone is at the door they usually cack themselves :D

Nasty shock if anyone tries to break into our garden, 2 innocent little chis closely followed by big lad. Who is a bite trained GSD x Mali! Gave the nosey delivery guy a shock when he peeked over the gate to look at my dogs lol!

I always worry about my mums spaniel. I could honestly say I'd rip someone's head off if they touched any of the dogs I know
