Not his first lesson - he's been long lining on the roads for a few months now. The difference today was the harness, and a pro driver behind him! He was angelic for a while, until he decided he would rather be in the field, and was furious to be told to shut up and get on with it! 10 minutes of head waving, stamping, broncing, rearing and trying to spin later, he realised that resistance was futile, and it would be sensible to do as he was told. 2 minutes later, he was back in the field. Useful life lessonLong lining lesson 1?
Will he consent to there ever being a long lining lesson 2, do you think?
I am on the fence about actually putting him to a carriage! He is the most unflappable pony, but he has a stubborn streak a mile aide, and if he doesn't want to do something, he makes it VERY clear! One time, I long reined my Sh!tland along the road in the rain. He knew how to long rein. He was not afraid of rain, he came off Shetland for goodness sakes. But no, he met a puddle and there he planted. And planted.
I had to ring Mr Red as I could not shift him. Could not drag him, could not push him.
Traffic built up. Mr Red tried. No.
He was long reining with a little saddle on, reins through the stirrups. Mr Red is very strong. He ended up putting his arm down the gullet of the saddle (loosening the girth a bit) and physically lifting the brat to the side of the road. Where...
He became angelic Shetland and walked in hand as if he was an angel.
We decided not to bother trying to train him to harness. TBH, Rolo was cleverer than me. Rolo just had a lovely life, eating and supervising his slaves.

I'm secretly impressed by his ability to sit behind. He'd have canter pirouettes nailed in no time if he was big enough to ride!Ha ha ha ha ha ha! The eyes! The eyes!
I actually thought at first glance that was what you were doing with him: I have seen a shetland in Portugal that was being ridden by a 6 year old doing piaffe, passage, Spanish Walk and levade, so it is eminently possible.I'm secretly impressed by his ability to sit behind. I'm now contemplating seeing if I can get him doing some funky stuff on long reins!I actually thought at first glance that was what you were doing with him: I have seen a shetland in Portugal that was being ridden by a 6 year old doing piaffe, passage, Spanish Walk and levade, so it is eminently possible.
I have a very similar one - you can have it if you’d like, then you could have a pair of ‘em! Smurf is a Dartmoor hill pony but obv a big dollop of shitland in him!
She would distract him, the hussy! She reverses up to anything male! Would work best as a wheeler in a tandem.....Don't tempt me - a matching pair would be even more entertaining! One of TFFs is similar, but she's a girl, and I think he might be a bit distracted!
The look that says ( to misquote Liam slightly )Even though I wasn't the one long lining him, I think he's blaming me!
