every horse owners worst nightmare.((((hugs)))) I am so sorry. I'm sure it would have been very quick and he would have died doing something he enjoyed very much which is probably how most of us would chose to go if we had the choice.16 years is a long time together. He was obviously a very special horse to you.
thankyou for all your condolences it is nice to talk to people who understand. It was very quick and he did love doing his xc, just twisted my knee bit stiff but will see what it is like in the morning
This happened to a friend of mine too. A good while back when I was still team chasing, her horse had a heart attack as he was jumping the fence in front of me and fell down dead straight after.
As others have said, the consolation is that your horse went out doing something he probably enjoyed. My friend's horse had been retired, but he got so upset standing in the field not doing anything, that after a while she brought him back into work and took him out hinting and chasing again - both activities he lived for. She never regretted the way he died, but obviously it was so sad for everyone.
Hope I go doing something I love too - its a wish that all too many of us don't have come true.
my boy had not jumped at a show for two years he was semi retired but just thought he would like to go, he was so happy to go on the trailer he dragged me up, and he jumped the first three fences with such enthusiasm I got left behind at the 1st
So sorry for you, it must of been awful but like others have said try to take some consolation from the fact that he was doing something he loved & was with you right to the end & didn't suffer,
