Thank you everyone for your kind replies - I've read every one of them. I have a feeling that I'm going to feel even worse tomorrow when I wake up early and realise that I don't have to muck out (my mare is currently in hospital so I don't even have to go to the yard for her). My day will be empty, and I think it's going to be a very emotional and difficult weekend.

Oh, I am so, so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful picture of you both. He was stunning. My heart goes out to you. I know exactly how you feel. I lost my old racehorse, Bob, four and a half months ago. He was there one minute, and taken from me the next. I too, had him 10 years. I miss him every day. I know you feel like your world has crashed, but the decision was right, and he was lucky to have such a lovely, caring owner. Treasure your sweet memories of him . He will always be with you , whatever you do.
