I lost my heart horse to colic devastated

A few days a go I got a call from my friend who was checking on my 2 horses while I worked ( I was going the evening) to say my horse wasn't eating her haynet and was bloated. I instantly left work and called the vet. They live out with shelter I walked her slowly to a flat bit of field incase she decided to roll. And the vet came and examined her and her intestines were that enlarged he couldn't feel passed them. He gave her pai killer and buscapan and we started to talk about options. Then all of a sudden she started gasping for breath and she died. I am so devastated this horse was my absolute everything.
She had colic when I first got her 5 years ago. But hasn't had it since. I really try manage her. She's a chunky cob. The weather has been horrendous and -6 at some points. But I made sure she had hay nets/ water and rugged. Just feel i let her down somehow 😭.
She lives with my daughters cheeky pony and he is ok.
 
Thankyou the pain is just unbearable. She was like a dream come true. Always rode and loaned horses but she was fhe first one i had bought and waited till my 30s to get her.
Thought she would be with me for a lot more years yet. She's been so amazing. We just hack out a couple of times a week. My kids take her on little hacks too. My daughter even took her in a little show last year as her pony is too cheeky ! And she was perfect.
Just can't imagine life without her in it .

It sounds like she had a lovely life with you, so you absolutely didn't let her down.

Just feel there must of been something I could of done. The grass has been frozen the last week here. So she's been still living out put with haynets. She has a dust allergy so is better living out. She had the pony have a massive shelter. Have been soaking her nets. She had water and was rugged. Just dont understand why.

There may well have been something wrong inside and nothing you did or didn’t do was going to change the outcome. She had a lovely life with you and a caring and quick end.
 
I’m so sorry for your loss. What a terrible shock for you! How damn unfair it is.
One of my work colleagues lost one of her horses to colic on Christmas Day. I’m sure it was nothing you did so please don’t add on any guilt to your grieving. The loss is hard enough to deal with.

I can’t imagine how tough it is for you atm but look after yourself. Sending big hugs to you.

I am so sorry to read this. It is heartbreaking to lose a special horse. Lots of us can appreciate how you feel. Please don't blame yourself and search for answers. Colic is a horrible thing. Sending hugs.

I'm so so sorry. From someone who has been there and seriously beaten themselves up, please don't blame yourself. You sound like a caring and dedicated owner. These things happen and it is heartbreaking, but sometimes we never know why. Look after yourself and your family. 💚

So sorry for your loss. It sounds like she had a lovely, easy life with you and that's all any horse can ask for. My vet said there has been a huge influx of colic cases recently due to all the freezing weather, so it's really nothing you could have prevented.

Only just caught up with this, but so sorry to read of your loss. Colic has a multitude of causes and it's impossible to prevent them all, unfortunately. I lost my old Shetland to it in 2009. He wasn't as 'lucky' and must have colicked not long after I left, because I found him dead the next day. In his case he was suspected to have pedunculated lipomas, which would have been impossible to predict, but I 100 % understand the guilty feeling. Big hugs and don't feel like you let her down. She was clearly well loved.
 
So sorry for your loss. I lost my old boy to colic a couple of years ago. It is heart breaking. Be kind to yourself. The guilt is normal, grief is a process. Sounds like she had the best care with you - one lucky pony.

@:0) I'm so sorry for your loss, she sounds like such a lovely horse. What a shock upon a shock it must've been for you to go through, first that she acutely had gotten sick, and then when standing there discussing the options with the veterinarian, she just dies.
We all know that it can happen, we all know that the situation could've led to you having to make the difficult decision, but one still doesn't expect to actually abruptly have all the decisions taken out of your hands just like that. As others have said, colic is so unpredictable, and sometimes you just have bad luck.

I recently read somewhere that grief is love that no longer have anywhere to go.

I’m so sorry for your loss, what a shock. Didn’t want to read and not leave a comment. I’m almost certain you did everything ‘right’ and it was a devastatingly unpredictable scenario ❤️
