Hi.
I was ecstatic today as I managed to prevent my mares water from freezing last night. I thought that some of you might find it useful to know how I did it.
I half filled three black bin bags with screwed up newspsper and stuffed these inside an old tyre from my Landrover. I then placed the tyre inside the stable in the corner well away from the door and out of any wind.( The door is left open for the Mare to go in and out as she pleases) The tyre was placed on top of rubber matting and about 3"shavings. I used a rubber tub trug which holds about 10 to 12 gallons inside the tyre with the paper fitting snugly against the tub trug. The water which she hadn't drunk only has the thinest possible skin of ice on top.
I just wish that I had thought of this idea 2 weeks ago.
If anyone decides to try the same thing I hope that it will work as well for you as it has for me.
