There seems to be numerous posts about the acceptable care of horses at min, some trolls?? some not... so I was just thinking... I have 3 and they are a full time job.. im pretty much there 3 times a day or im up there all day.. now at minimum I would hope a horse kept out should be seen everyday and those in a minimum of twice a day.. however my personal view is with all the breeding going on and low prices etc it seems you can buy a horse for the price of a bag of groceries at min or free so a lot of people with no knowledge think they would be like a puppy.. cute cuddly etc, although they can afford to buy them they cannot afford or do not realise the cost of basic needs. So having followed the thread of the foal dumped near to me and numerous stories of a similar nature im kind of getting very p...ss.d off with the fact that the breeders of these horses are often never mentioned, surely it is not worth breeding foals who are going to make 65 quid!! And yes I have seen numerous foals offered on fb for that or under or free ?? I just don't get why everyone can be so outraged by numpties who get these horses and yet never question those breeding and selling to these numpties ?

Don't kill me and no I def am not a troll !!

Agree totally, the only way to get ontop of the horse crisis in this country is to stop indescriminate breeding.

BUT HOW??????????

I agree entirely with you.

The only way to deal with all these unwanted horses is the meat man, so long as there is no live exports I'd be for that.

What you don't want is lots of horses becoming welfare cases which is too cruel.

I quite agree.

We're supposed to be a nation of animal lovers  - but it's not just horses that are overbreed for a profit.

Granted there are more new owners with spare money who think they know what they're doing IMHO - I'm a new owner - I spend lots of time with him, training him and schooling him - we're getting there with help (we're also full livery - I don't know enough yet to go DIY).

It saddens me that other new owners buy a horse, throw it into the full livery - just to bring in, ride out and leave it in the stable and wander why they're having problems in the school, mounting, taking out to shows etc. and just laugh if their horse is a wind-sucker/cribber .

I agree with all about Romeo. Far too many unwanted horses, charities can't possibly take them all in. As long as there are no live exports, surely it is better than continueing to let the number of poor quality, badly bred horses increase. Also it is no quality if life for the horse being passed from pillar to post because numptys don't realise how much time and money they consume

but my point being there would not be all these unwanted horses if people used common sense and stopped breeding.

I think there should be some licensing in place to stop joe blogs from just breeding as it seems the only ones going to suffer are the poor horses.

I for one do not donate money to countries who altho cannot feed themselves will still carry on having babies however I would happily donate condoms etc or funds to tie tubes, I just think these poor foals are being born to die or be dumped !

If I could not afford to have children then I would make sure I didn't have them.

Absolutely agree with this, what a shame we lost nearly all the small abatoirs when the EU regulations came into force. Reduced breeding would help to stop this, but I can't see it anytime soon :(

Thank you, but I ment I dont agree with sending unwanted horses to the slaughter house... :(

The trouble with licenses is the responsible people will have them the irresponsible wont so the only people who will comply with the law will be those that have a respect for their horses and hate the indiscriminate breeding of any animal

It's the ones who dump it in a field with no care/ idea and won't be told that annoy me. At least at full livery someone does the horse!

Agree re the breeding but I do think some people can be slightly judgemental when judging what a numpty is... I've read through a few of the posts re stable management today and refrained from posting but thought I would share as I know for certain I am not the only one. My horse is checked twice a day, once in the morning by me and once by one of my stable mates, depending on weather will be turned out fed watered etc. I have to go to the yard, feed and turn out at 7 during the week because of work schedule but at the weekend we do leave it later, usually 9-9:30, sometimes even 10. They have access to water and are given plenty of haylage and not once have I come down to find them wanting for either, generally they are still snoozing. I should also mention his stable is 15ft x15ft so plenty of space but I am a firm believer that our occasionally relaxed approach has lead to well balanced laid back horses.

I love my horse and he wants for absolutely nothing and I always make sure his basic needs are catered for but I don't think in the scheme of things arriving later at the weekend is necessarily a crime.

I don't really agree with it, but Tbf I think its the most practical solution and one that would have the must sucess. Unfortunately whilst there is a few bob o

I'm a breeder and I totally agree with you OP. I wouldn't even bother to breed any horses if the returns were not greater than the cost to put these foals on the ground. In my case we're talking foals selling for thousands not £65.

Even though its your human right to reproduce to ensure your emotional well-being? :p You should have as many babies, horses, goats, boats, rhinos, etc as it takes to make you happy and relieve any depressive feelings you may feel. You should love them with all your heart and then surely other people should give you the funds to care for them, and any offspring they then feel the need to bring into the world. That's fair, right? :D

A few years ago I'd have agreed with you, but until indiscrimate breeding is curtailed what other options are there?

I hate the idea of healthy horses being pts, but too many horses + not enough people to take them on + charities near breaking point = a really horrible situation.

well il clarify what I call a numpty... someone who asks does my horse need feeding on xmas day? a numpty is someone who will leave a horse in a field for weeks on end with poor grazing and no water until the neighbours ring up to tell them, etc etc, we all have days off and a horse will not suffer going an extra hour wth no care... but horses that are bred and then sold to people who ask..what shall I feed it.. will it need a rug..will it eat sunday dinner, can I ride it at 8 months old... is it ok to bash it around until it gives in, shall I tether it at 6 months old when just separated from mum with a chain when never been trained to tether...the list goes on that to me shows a numpty and breeders are selling to these numpties just to get rid of stock!!

I just don't see the profit so therefore why are they doing it??

Seriously I just don't get it !

I'm with pale rider, although I would like to find a way to curb breeding in the first place. And I too would like to know what alternative solution there is all about Romeo.

There have been numerous posts on various threads about indescriminate breeding. Perhaps do a search?

Its just society now isn't it? Be an incompetent, flakey, irresponsible, lazy idiot and people will pay for and look after you and bring you stuff you want. Its starting to really take the piss IMO.

You... Have just said what would have taken me a whole page lol!! This is the whole problem, but no-ones going to do anything about it and it will just get worse and worse... Sad really :(

I agree - there's too many people who think they know what they're doing or can't afford a full livery. The horse/pony suffers - the owners don't give a .....
