...disguised in shetland clothing!!!
Yesterday, we went to collect our friends new horse. On the way there i said jokingly to mum "wouldn't it be good if they had a pony they wanted to sell aswell!!". Our friends new horse is a 7yr old very green, 15.2hh selle francais x Normandy cob quiet, but getting her into the trailer was a nightmare!! Apparently the last time they loaded her she went in on the 2nd go...BUT not yesterday!! It took almost an hour to get her in. I was leading her up to the trailer with 2 people with lunge lines 'trapping' her behind...But she still managed to rear up kick out at me and step sideways. All I could do was stand there every time she did this...we tried EVERYTHING we could think of...she wasn't scared because I walked her up to the trailer, jumped up and down on the ramp and she didn't budge....I then made loads of noise in and around the trailer
but she was just being naughty. I suggested we try putting the shetland in the trailer first, then putting the mare on. The woman said "I wouldn't go near it myself, but you can try..."
So off I went and grabbed the pony's head collar, walked into the field and the womans children were shouting "you can't go in there he will bite and kick you, he's horrible" I didn't listen to them and carried on!! I almost got his head collar on and he dropped his shoulder and went to kick me, but I was quicker and shooed him away before he could! I then shooed him away every time he came near me and every time he came closer
I finally went to put his head collar on again and he kicked out in front and dropped his shoulder and kicked....this time I caught his bum with the head collar and he bucked, then trotted off chucking in tiny bucks...but he has an amazing action
Then he decided to come back and i reached my hand out to him, almost got his head collar on AGAIN and he kicked out, and reared almost upright - his feet were above my head
I made myself as big as possible and made a funny noise showed him who was boss and he came back down
In the end I did catch him because they managed to load the mare with food and 2 lunge lines and a whip
I think people had had enough of having their feet trampled and being barged out of the way.
I went up to the owner of the shetland and that I would like to have him, and that I wasn't happy him being around small children (3, 7 and 10 - I think), I did not want them getting hurt. I'm probably mad for saying this but the pony had attacked the son....
He has been allowed to be boss for far too long
What I have been told is that the pony has no manners, noooo never, and he has been allowed to get away with everything, really i would never have guessed.....And that if the first time he sees you if you don't tell him whos boss then he will take the p!$$ from then on.....urm isn't that like any horse that is naughty?!?! Sorry...the owners have no idea how to look after horse
Basically he is being treated like a dog...
He is black, I would say an overgrown shetland (but I could be wrong...didn't really take in how big (small!) he was, about 14yrs old (it think thats what they said!
), a big grass belly and hes a stallion...now why they didn't get him gelded beats me!! I said I wanted him as I was not happy leaving him there where no-one looked after him properly and no one told him who was boss and he was allowed to get away with everything....Am I being totally unreasonable/stupid?
I have given the woman my telephone number, and she is going to talk to her husband! I don't want to pay anything for him, as tbh I don't think he's worth anything the way he is now but if I have to pay I will, as they are French and they don't like giving away animals/things...etc!!
He is a lovely looking pony and has really expressive paces, it's just a shame the people treated him like a dog and not the naughty pony he is. They are scared of him because they have allowed him to become boss
Do you think I did the right thing?
How much would you pay max for the shetland??
Sorry for rant and thank you if you read all of it
