I get charged for everything I want done with my horse. If I wanted my horse clipped (before I started doing it myself) or wanted transport, again before I got my own, I would get charged the going rate for doing so (even from friends). This is quite right and I didnt mind doing so. Why is it that when I clip a horse or my horse box comes into it that people expect me to provide this service for nothing because i know them !! ????? I think I must have mug written across my forehead. It really agrevates me I can tell you. Sorry rant over and I do feel very slightly better for it, but not much !!.

just say NO! people will only take the piddle if you allow them to do so. i used to do anything for anyone but now its not the worth the grief, help those you can as long as when required they also help you out. x

You are clearly far too nice a person.

If it really aggrieves you, you need to learn to smile and say, "I'll be more than happy to help you out, but I'm going to have to charge you £xx to cover my blade resharpening/fuel costs...."

Agree, just say NO! Its all well and good until your clippers get damaged or box trashed and then nobody wants to pay for repairs either! If they cant afford, they cant have!

I've always been the first to offer money when friends have helped me out...and then have the little fight that follows with them not wanting to take it and me shoving it in pockets!!! Now I have my own lorry I have put a little box in the cab saying 'Fuel donations'...:D Only given 1 person a lift and she kindly donated some penny's so I'm hoping it will save on embarrassment in the future.

It's disappointing. You hope friends will act like real human beings.

When someone helps you, you offer to pay to help them. When it's the reverse, you don't ask and they let you down. ("Oh, but you should have told me" they'll mew, "I thought since you were going there already another horse wouldn't cost you anything more?").

Just say no unless it "amuses" you to bring them along. I looked in the rule books, I couldn't find it anywhere that arriving with room in your box was illegal, immoral or fattening.

I know it is so much easier said than done, but just say no. Don't say no, but... or no, sorry.... as it then drops you into scrabling for excuses. A simple no with a friendly smile is sufficient. It is your stuff and your time, no one elses to make use of unless you choose.

pmsl at this!!!! We often use our trailer for just the one of our horses at a time - que huge leaden hint from those on the yard about how much they would love to go out more, if only they ever got the chance (violins etc!!). They all have trucks and several of them have trailers too - they just don't get their act together. Be nice if they chatted to us at other times though lol! Prob is it took me ages to save to buy my own trailer as before I couldn't go out, and they go around saying how highly stung their fancy comp horse is! I'm sorry, but if your horse is such a psycho with such an extraordinary list of special needs why on earth would I transport them at my risk and cost?!!!

just say no sorry but i am not insured to clip other peoples horses/not insured to transport other peoples horses, because at the end of the day IF you had a clipping accident .. a tendon or an eye you would be sued. and transport ......... have you got your SVS type 1 or 2? your CET or ACET for transport? and does your vehicle insurance cover you for hire and reward, and is your vehicle plated, and inspected every 6 weeks to comply with DEFRA, and then is your 3c care in place? (care, custody and control) then of course there is the tax man.

I think I must be a supposed mug too, although I have managed to just say NO to a friend who thinks I should "feed" her two horses when she goes away soon. "Oh yes, they'll still be stabled of course.........."

I would LOVE to go away, and get someone to do all my animals FOR FREE ;), but unfortunately because of said animals, I can't afford to go away in the first place.

My rant now over too, sorry..

It definately sucks and if you don't mind doing things and are uncomfortable charging maybe offer swaps?

On my yard we just swap favours. Not always easy of someone doesn't wanta favour. I am looking after my friends 2 dogs, 3 cats and a horse while she goes on holiday, but she is an amazing cook and is leaving me food for the week and looking after my boy when I go away.

My YO gets me to do things in return for lessons etc

Definately be strict about transport, if you take money and aren't licensed you could get done, so either don't take money or don't take the horse. (though I would be the pushing money on your pockets type! :) )

Well ,I am feeling that at least some people dont take me for granted. Got a lovely bottle of wine yesterday (good stuff too) for changing a tyre for one of nextdoors stablegirls. Bless her heart.
