hi, im new to this and just need a bit of advice

my mare (welsh section D) had an itchy coat just with loosing her coat,
i was using Dermoline medicated shampoo on her every week and it was working a treat she wasnt itching and it was clearing up.
A 16 year old girl at my yard was going mental to my boyfriend, who doesnt know much about horse, saying it was sweet itch and that it was going to spread to her horse etc.
i told them and the other girls told her its not sweet itch we are in december, shes loosing her coat and sweet itch is not contageous.
anyone long story short she has been putting "switch" sweet itch lotion on my mair around her tail without asking permission or telling me and its burnt all skin where she has put it!
going crazy to say the least! ive tried to phone her, ignoring my calls and hasnt been at the yard,
i have the vet out tomorrow to look it over because its all weeping and bleeding!
is it not illegal to medicate someones horsse without permission? am i worng to sent her the vets bill??

im so angry and my poor baby is in pain!!!!!

thanks

Your poor mare! Hope the vet can help clear it all up!

Medicating another person's horse is certainly not on, although I am not sure you would get very far with the law.

Sweet itch is certainly not contageous and if what you were doing worked then there was no need to try anything else.

If this was my horse I would speak to the YO asap and ask her to make absolutely certain no one does anything to my horse without my permission. It's the YOs responsibility to sort this out and keep the other livery from interfering with your horse.

You can certainly try to get your vet's fees back from this livery and you are definately entitled to them, but it may be quite a struggle. If she's around when the vet visits perhaps he could have a word with her to figure out what exactly she put on the horse? I haven't heard of sweet itch lotion causing burning although I don't really know to be honest.

thanks
i would just never dream of doing it.
silly girl!!!
shes been rugged in winter and now i cant put the rug on because its sticking to the burn.. and when i finish work and get up i have to rip it off:(
i feel so bad and dont know what to do.
maybe vet will put a dressing on but i havent got a clue its in such a awkward place.
yard owners not really interested i dont think!

i think i might just go and speak to her parents.
i dont want to be the grumpy one but she needs to be told!

YOs have a legal duty of care so they don't really have the option of not being interested.

However, if you really can't get anywhere with them, I would seriously think of changing yards.

i would definately speak to the yard owner, its their job to sort out problems. dont speak to the parents just yet as things may get a bit heated & you dont want to end up with the silly little madam doing anything worse!
perhaps a cream to put on the burn site would stop the rug sticking? i`m sure your vet will have a good idea.
you need to find out exactly what she has put on as unless there`s an allergic reaction then no sweet itch cream should cause a burn
sorry cant be of more help hope your girl gets better soon

i agree with the above, Switch would not cause a burn, so find out exactly what she put on your horse. if YO is being useless and weak get the police, seriously - she has injured your horse, you are going to have to pay vets bills to sort it out. that will make her realise that doing such a thing to someone else's horse (especially totally misguidedly - how stupid is she if she thinks sweet itch is contagious or infectious?!) is absolutely unacceptable. being 16 is no excuse.

thanks for all help.
shes denying it totally and has tried to blame everone else, and yard owner says we cant prove anything even though all the evidence points to her. and says we should just learn and she wont touch my mare again.

vet out tomorow again to give her anti-biotics because its infected.
its drying up a bit but shes so sore:(
ill let you all know more when i know tomorrow.
really am not happy im scared to leave my horses their now ive got a youngster (9 month old colt) god know what i would do if they put it on him!!!

It could cause a burn if the pony is allergic to Switch. My mare is allergic to citronella which culminated in a large chemical burn, a very hot and sore horse and after a few days, a fairly bald horse.

This silly child needs to read a few more text books if she thinks sweet-itch occurs in the winter and is contagious. You could always try frightening the truth out of her by saying you are going to see a solicitor and the police are going to fingerprint the bottle with a view to a prosecution for animal cruelty!

I would definitely speak to her parents if you think they are decent reasonable people. But then if they bred a little scrote who would actually harm a horse in this way they may not be!!

Whatever you do be very calm and very measured, even charming about it. Don't let them see you are angry as it just brings out the worst in people.

If no good talking to parents then fatpiggy's advice sounds like a plan. Could you actually call WHW or RSPCA etc on grounds of animal cruelty??? Why not the police as you should be entitled to compensation for vets fees? Maybe post on soapbox to see if there are any solicitors around who could advise you??

thanks for all your help guys, i had the vet out it has been caused by the "switch" she took a reaction to it, hence why a patch test should be done before it was put on.
but the infection is clearing up shes getting better slowly. vet said that the hair may not grow back in and/or may grow back grey. im not to fussed about that as long as shes ok.
i spoke to parents and they said that their daughter would not do that.
but yard owner is paying my vets bills because i threatened legal action and they dont want any of that.
now the girl is on about moving yards. thankfully!

thankyou all muchly for advice
xx
