....Long rein!

Please tell me everything, I am a complete beginner and I need to know EVERYTHING from equipment to position to words to use etc!

Thank you hugely muchly in advance! xx

I think it would be easier for someone to show you how to do it rather than write reams of explanatory words on a forum. Is your OH not an experienced horseman?

Things I use to long rein are..
Bridle
Roller
2 long reins
boots
Hi vis when on the road!

Start off with the long reins in the bottom rings of the roller, and lunge with 2 reins. After a while move yourself around to the back of horse, almost gradually so he wont notice. I then just use my voice as in walk on, and whoa. I ALWAYS have someone come out with me when on the road as you cant really thank drivers for slowing down very easliy! OH always walks in the middle of the road, and slows the cars for me. He walks at about Donovans shoulder.

Personally I think it would be money well spent to get a good recommended Instructor to come and show you and help you out when you have a go yourself, there's a bit of skill handling and controlling the lines and knowing what you are trying to achieve and getting the correct results.

Saying that I do find it a very useful exercise and a good skill to aquire.

I strongly suggest you have a lesson with a horse that has done it before, because you will be getting your knitting tangled up, tripping over the lines and dropping them. (Can you tell how I learned?) Obviously, make sure your horse is 100% happy with having things dragging on the floor and is not going to be frightened and take off with things dragging behind him.

Theres a knack to long reining, get a good instructor to show you and help you for the first session, or an experienced person who knows what theyre doing.
Remember to glove up and wear your hat as well especially if you and the horse have never long reined before, onece you get the hang of it youll be ok, but it might take a wee bit of time to begin with

Make sure you use gloves and wear a hat as well

I still think that you should get someone to show you rather than trying to do it through 'book learning'. As with most horsemanship skills, there is more to long-reigning than meets the eye.

I have even had a lesson on how to lunge and loose school effectively. I learnt how to read the horse's body language and to use my own body language to best effect. No amount of reading could have put me in the right place.

I will say again, why not ask your partner, as I know from what you have written previously that he is an experienced horseman. If he really hasn't a clue either, why not ask someone who has?
