Well before I tell you about our ODE at Moreton, let me tell you what happened on the way home. I get a call on my mobile from our next door neighbour, "Now don't worry but your husband has just gone off in the air ambulance to hospital..."
It seems he and Jacques parted company rather violently (not sure what happened, but he was thrown off, lay on the floor until one of our tenant's found him, they called the ambulnce which round here is a local part time fire brigade, they called the Air Ambulance and off he went to Exeter hospital!
I sounds as if he has smashed his heel quite badly, but all we can think of is he perhaps tightened the girth tighter than CCJ does, the horse came home with a bit of a sweat rash and she had been using a fluffy thing, I doubt he would have realised that and the extra pressure may have made it go wild.. I'll find out tomorrow after they operate no doubt. The horse has been good as gold with CCJ too all week..
Right back to the event. Last night CCJ's trainer said she needed to try working him in before the dressage as his best results have been with literally none at all.
Today was boiling hot so she did just ten mins, but as soon as he entered the arena he died on her. She was so busy attemptinmg to get him off her leg she forgot a halt and got beeped at (first time in her life). They crried on but the momentum had gone and it wasn't a particularly good test. I guessed36 and with the mistake, that's exactly what she scored.
Over to the Sj, she had already decided with a test like that she might as well just have fun, and he jumped a bold clear.
The Xc had a couple of more difficult fences, a corner and a jump over a log landing in the water, and he zoomed round clear. In the end they were 7th, so his record of being placed every event so far is unbroken..
She is upgrading him to Novice at Nutwell Court as he is finding P Novice very easy.
Our neighbour from up the road won her Open Pre Novice too, which was lovely, and the local saddle shop lady's son won his too, so we all got placed!
He lent us some slightly shorter but sharper spurs, we are at a loss what to do to get Chocx livelier in the dressage. He knows damn well she has no whip and just ambles compared to his way of working at home. He is so fit you wouldn't believe, he finished under the timebarely warm..(bear in mind he fence walks for at least 5 hours a day) and is on fast response feed, I am loathe to give him oats as he tied up once after rounding the whole horse herd up, and I wasn't sure it was the feed or excitement that caused it, but he needs more oomph from somewhere. He's fine jumping, but just finds dressge boring I think. I would like to feed him barley but am not sure if that will work.
Any quick fixes anyone?
So tomorrow I have to visit my husband in hospital , then arrange for my ill Mother in Law to be brought here 300 miles asap by my son as she is declining rapidly in health since her husband died three months ago, and my sister may have had a cancer relapse.. I feel like Casualty gone wrong...
Somehow it puts today's dressage fiasco into perspective doesn't it....

Oh Christ!!!! Poor you! Do hope OH is ok....... Well done for today tho, I think with all that pressure from other sources I would have preferred to curl up in bed with a book!
keep us updated!

I always found that popping over a couple of jumps during the warm up. (Not much good at a pure dressage comp) but my lad always perks up if he has had a jump or two. Just a thought?

I hope hubby is much better very soon too. (I forgot all about him once I started reading your competition report section

Never rains it pours - Best wishes to your OH and hope the news is not too bad.
Nutwell is a lovely novice - so glad you have decided to go there before SLM!

Best wishes to your poor hubby HH. Sounds v nasty, and lucky indeed that your tenants found him. My aunt has just had a similar op (she fell down the stairs rather than of a horse though). She has been told she will be laid up for 4 weeks.

Blimey HH, talk about dramatic! I do hope hubbie is ok.

C is doing v well with Chox - may see you at Nutwell Court - I found with the dressage last year that if I warmed up with a whip and dropped it just before I entered at A, for at least the first half of the test B thought I still had it so was more forward - may be worth a try?

Thanks we've tried the drop the whip (did it yesterday). It was very humid and he is older but how come he is full of sparkle jumping? I think moving up to Novice will help, the PN tests don't seem to have much about them, he learns them far too quickly, she daren't practice at home more than once ever.
Someone has lent us some shorter sharper spurs, and we will try those, but of courseat home he is full of go..
We will phone today to try and swap into Novice, do come over if you're at NC, it's the lilac and dark purple lorry. (with the harrassed looking woman running in circles round it)

It never rains..... you must be shattered hope oh is up and about soon!! Clever chocx. Nutwell Court is lovely & will give him a bit more to think about.

oh gosh, sounds like you have had a pretty hectic weekend. I hope your OH is ok

Well done on the result aswell. No ideas about feed etc, as it does sound like hes just getting a bit bored with the dressage, as hes obviously got the energy/stamina for the SJ and XC....

Oh HH you have the patience of a saint I swear you do! Big hugs for Phil (and you too!) and I hope he is on the mend and up and about very soon.

No it's got worse this morning, MIL has just been rushed into A and E possible heart failue, (my son is with her) Husband has rung full of the woes as the injury is a severe one and they may not be able to operate or if they do it may never return to being normal again, and as both hospitals are 300 miles apart I'm stuffed for visiting both.
On the good side Caroline rode Jacques the culprit and he was as good as gold, so not sure what happened yesterday, P says he got on, walked three strides and all hell let loose, he really can buck and he had forgotten the neck strap (C uses that, a breastplate and a matingale all so she has control) He stuck on for a few leaps then flew off to land heavily on his heel.
So I have several problems at once and need more than a large brandy today ..(wish I did drink brandy it might make life easier!) I'll get through today then I may just pour a large gin and tonic with ice and lemon and wait for the next disaster to happen...

Sounds like a dramatic weekend!!
Am a bit late to this post, so hope the shock of it is past..
Get well wishes to both Phill and your sis..
Bloody well done to Caz and Choc..
And good luck for the first novice!!

Holy bazookers!

I'm so sorry to hear of all your troubles. Talk about it never rains but it pours.

Hope everyone recovers well and that it's not bad news for your sister.

Re the Choc problem, I have exactly the same thing with mine.
It doesn't sound like it can be fixed by changing the feed as he's fine in the jumping so it's a schooling mindset issue.
When they're going round before the horn goes, what are they doing? Trotting?
I ask because it seems to help my lot by cantering and doing short bursts of medium/gallop and even putting in walk or halt transitions in between to get them buzzing a bit!
Is he lazy in his flatwork at home?

Mmm she usually canters and halts a few times, it's definitely a mind matter as he is ok in more difficult tests, he just finds these boring I think..
We would gallop him round the arena but the person in the next one would go ape I would think, so next plan is find a jump or two first, then do medium trot or fast canter, and try the sharper spurs...(I was even told yesterday about a certain top eventing yard that use electric spurs...I had no idea such things existed,!)
OH is bearing up to his accident, but it does sound a difficult one to fix, and no riding for a long time I expect. Typical just when his dressage horse was going superbly. MIL has been admittedto hospital with irregular heartbeat and should be out again within the week, then down here to convalesce. Sister sees consultant tomorrow so any good vibes appreciated..
Feeling slightly less traumatised this evening, now to prepare for having two invalids in the house.. I'll have to train Harry the retriever to fetch and carry I reckon between them.
