Normally at home I ride Doug in a french link snaffle which he goes nicely in at home and I can just about hold him and keep him steady with it when cantering round fields. When I take him anywhere I normally use a pelham without the curb chain, so its only a bit stronger and sort of acts like a hanging cheek snaffle, he goes quite nicely in this bit aswell. But when jumping/xc'ing out and about he seems to get a bit more forward than I would like and uses his big strong neck to sort of drag me around

I want something that I can use if I need the brakes, but not something that will ruin his mouth as he is only a baby. Just something where if I need it e.g. when he decides to run off bronking I can give a few pulls and he slows down

Any ideas? Shall I just buy the same pelham he is in when he goes out? ( its my friends bit that I am borrowing at the moment)

Would he be different in a grackle?

How about a kineton (puckle) noseband? It puts some pressure on the nose from the bit, without needing a stronger bit, so is good for a young horse. Don't fit it too low. It worked well for my young horse years ago, for those occasions when he got strong eg hunting, cross country.
