My hat is over two years old, and took quite a thud on Monday when I fell off (yet again...

So, it's definitely time for a new one and i need some suggestions for what to get!

Price is very much an issue as I'm really poor at the mo, so it needs to be cheap (but obviously needs to meet all the safety standards).

At the mo I have a skull cap with a velvet cover. Would be happy to stick with that, or perhaps look for something that makes me look slightly less like a mushroom!

Also wondering whether people buy hats off the internet? I know they will be cheaper but I'd be a bit worried it would get bashed around on its way to me.

I need to get my head measured too - the size of my current hat was on the lining, but jumpthemoon's dog ate the lining a year ago....

So, suggestions please, and would you buy a hat off t'internet?

I have a charles owen jockey skull for general riding which is great and v comfy. I don't think too expensive either? Have a Champion ventair for competing but think this is a tad mroe expensive.

Dublin Onyx, great value lighweight and incredibly comfy.

I did buy my current hat from the internet but only because I wanted to buy exactly the same model as my last hat. If you are going for something different then you really need to try it on first to get the best fit. All brands come in a slightly different shape and you'll find that what will fit you in one brand won't in another

I wouldn't buy off the internet because the same size in different hats comes up differently. I've gone down a size in my new hat - even though my old one felt tighter. I'd go to a shop and try on a few so you can find one that's the right shape for you as well as size. You might be lucky if the sales are still on!

I love my ventair but tbh it doesn't fit as well as the gatehouse I use for competing in and they are both the same size. I wouldn't be comfortable buying a hat without trying it on first to check fit as they all vary so much in shape and feel that that is more important than saving a few pounds.

To give you an idea of your size, measure around your head just above your eyebrows, this will give you something like 57cm, this then equates into either the size or an equivalent

See size guide and conversion chart at http://www.tackshop-online.com/Product%20pages/Size%20Guide.htm

Then go into a tackshop and try one on, get them to fit you. I've done my Beta training for this and because it could save your life, I recommend to try one on! Then you could always do the awful thing and buy one on line!! (retailler won't like you much!) Do not go for a hat that requires padding, if it doesn't fit properly without then don't buy it, look at a different make. (the exception is certain types of heads more commonly found in the eastern hemisphere.)
