Poor George puts on weight just looking at grass so for his health wears a muzzle for most of the summer :( we firstly tried a greenguard one, but it wasn't successful and rubbed his nose very badly :( so for the past 2 years we have been using a shires bucket type one and it seemed to work just fine and didn't rub.

I usually have to buy a new one mid season as they end up getting trashed, the bucket bit comes off the headcollar bit, or the rubber strips come apart from the webbing. At £15 each this didn't seem too bad.

The problem is that I bought him a new shires one on Monday, and today I have heard from the yard that he has completely trashed it  now I obviously can't buy a new one every week  So can anyone suggest one that is stronger i.e. what are the more expensive Bestfriend ones like?

In case you don't know George is a strapping 16.3 shire x so not lacking in the strength department! :D

Thanks

I've gone from a shires muzzle (hard to keep on) to a greenguard with headcollar, that we are trying out for very short periods atm. I hear what you and others have said about them rubbing, so am being very careful - but I'm finding it stays on, and is ok so far.

other alternative is the bucket or leather muzzle, both of which looks like torture instruments to me. It's so hard when they just have to sniff the grass to widen out. ;)

Another greenguard fan :) I use one for my mare with the greenguard head collar, it did rub her chin for the first couple of weeks but has been fine since - no rubs for 2 years and she wears it every day. My girl is a chunky 16.1hh warmblood x welsh D and believe me if she could get it off, she would :)

Shires here, but reinforced with gaffer tape - just going into it's second season!! We are strip grazing much earlier this year in an attempt to need the muzzle less, but it will go on if needed as she absolutly ballons with the amount of grass she stuffs down!
