I am buying a 6 year old TB and I have just found out he is a cryptorchid. He has bred quite a few foals and they are all fine. He is not stallion like at all, he is very calm and collected and he is out In the field with another stallion a colt and a 17.2 G gelding.. He is just super.

I was speaking to the lady at a vet nr. Tavistock and she said I need to have him castrated it will turn cancerous, I quote “It’s like a time bomb ready to explode”
She said he could be dangerous around spring time because of mares coming into season etc.. but this is a risk I am willing to take.
The only reason I would get him castrated is if it compromised his health in the future. I cannot see why I should do it when he is perfectly fine as he is and his temperament is just to die for.

Am I being selfish?

Any help will be most appreciated :0)

Thank you xx

I have just looked this up " teratomas tumours occur more commonly in cryptorchid testes and can be enormous if cystic tissue developes in them; others contain bone, hair and teeth."

"there is evidence that the condition is hereditary"

"Interstitial cell tumours have been linked to cryptorchid testes and has been incriminated as a cause of viciousness."

I would say having read this that if it were me I would be booking him in to have them out!
Hope this helps.

A few years back a friend bought a 3 year old colt who was found to be cryptorchid (long story!) Colt had surgery to be gelded and the retained testicle was already showing signs of potentially cancerous changes. I would get yours gelded as soon as possible.
