I have the fussiest eater who needs D-Itch supplement in her feed as she has an allergic reaction to thistles and insists on lying in them

I was wondering if anyone had any tips at all of how I can get it in her? I have tried coating apples/carrots in the powder but she can smell it (TBH this stuff smells awful

so I am not surprised that she won't eat it, esp as she is so fussy anyway) and therefore won't touch it

If all else fails I can suringe it down her throat but I would rather find another way as this gets quite messy and she is a sensitive soul who won't take kindly to it!

So, any ideas please

I used to make a special concoction to get my mare to eat her BLK......strong peppermint tea with black treacle or molasses and honey. I used to make a bit bucket of it every night and mix it into her feed along with the BLK, it was the only way to get her to eat it.

My mare is fussy even with nothing mixed in her feeds and when i 1st started her on glucosamine she completely refused her feed, i stopped the glucosamine and bought a tub of dried peppermint and started mixing 2 big scoops in her tea which she ate then gradually reintroduced the glucosamine and so far ( touch wood ) she has eaten it every day and is actually for the 1st time ever excited for her feed.
The mint i bought was about £4 for a big tub and has lasted ages.

Thank you all for these ideas... they are all things I will try. She loves mint so adding that into her dinner sounds like a good idea

Thank you very much

If any of mine are on bute they won't eat it so I buy a tub of molasses, mix bute first with some of that then add rest of feed and give it a good mix up, always works

Tonight we were trying to get one of ours to take anti-bio's, bute and Synequin. Just now got back from Tesco with apple juice and have poured about half a pint in with her feed and she woofed it down. She is the most mardy, fussy 'opinionated orange one' with attitude. It feels sooooooo good when you can pull the wool over their eyes

my arab wont eat bute at all, managed to hide it once in a big bucket of sugarbeet.
Have also managed to get it down him mixed with apple juice. only worked once though.

A friend of mine used to go to the extreme of hollowing carrotts out and putting the bute inside as a way of smuggling it down her mares throat! But your ideas seem much better and easier!

I've always used jam sandwiches but if there is alot to get into her you will need a few jan sandwiches, otherwise they spit it out lol.

I also used to take the core out of apples put whatever in and put core top back on. But the Jam worked best.

The old horse I used to share would never eat anything suspicious - we tried mint, apple sauce, apple juice, mollasses, jam... in the end we syringed the damned bute down her fussy neck!! In the end you can usually find something (usually sweet) to disguise the suspect substance

We used to mix bute with instant hot chocolate and used an irregation syringe. It worked quite well and was the only way we could get her to eat it at all. She was very fussy, but seemed to quite like the hot chocolate

My old horse wouldn't eat anything with Bute in it......Except......Treacle sandwiches and yes this too is messy but is your horse likes them its a great way to hide anything and because its just a sandwich you can be sure its been eaten.
only problem is that my horse had bute occasionaly i guess d'itch is every day so might not be the healthiest option

when my old fussy mare had to have bute, she wouldnt eat anything suspicious looking, so we tried the jam sandwiches, it only worked with blackcurrant jam and brown bread.....forget the white stuff.....yuk! It had to be brown bread.
