After all the trauma's with Spider last year he has thankfully been ok since his last check up at the start of Jan. He still coughs, but is in work (we've been cantering for 2 weeks now
)& I'm hoping we'll be able to work round it & treat him as normal as possible.
So I was hoping 2008 would be a relatively vet free year. However Quinn has obviously decided he'd like to see what all the fuss was about with Spider & is now residing in the vets
He moved last weekend as a stable had finally come free & I was very happy to have both my boys at the same yard and in next door stable.
We have 2 geldings groups & as the other one already had 4 in it (including Spider) it was decided to put him out with the other group of 2. He's very laid back, never causes problem & normally keeps himself out of trouble as he'd rather be eating.
All was fine for a few days, but then on wednesday the in charge horse was in being ridden & second in command decided to hassle & hassle Q until he'd had enough. We're not sure exactly what happened, but think he skidded into the gate, which came off its hinges & he jumped over it & came running back to his stable
He seemed ok. A scrape on his upper front leg & a cut on his elbow about 1 1/2 inches in length. A little more than a graze, but not unduly deep. He was sound, so I cleaned it up & rode him gently in walk & trot that evening. He then went out in a seperate field the next day & we thought no more.
Saturday I got up there to see him hooning around. No sign of any lameness & my comment was ' I'm glad he's getting that out of his system before I ride him'
I hacked him out and all fine.
Sunday morning I got a call to say he couldn't move. I got down & his elbow & the top of his leg were very hot & swollen. He wouldn't move even to eat & def hadn't laid down overnight. I called the vet to say I was bringing him in. Poor boy was in agony & didn't want to move at all. I'm still not sure how I got him on the lorry as he was on 3 legs.
They xrayed his leg as they initially thought he might have fractured it. However as much as they can tell through the swelling, they think it's not broken but is infected. He was admitted & is on v strong painkillers & antibiotics. They are hoping once the swelling goes down they will be able to re xray & hopefully confirm no fracture.
I'm trying to stay postive. If all goes to plan & the infection (if thats what it is) is under control I'm hoping I might have him home again at the weekend.
When I left him yesterday, we had to put his hay & water in front of him as he didn't want to move at all.... even to eat, which is unheared of for Q.
So any positive vibes will be gratefully received.
Who'd have horses hey!!
