OK - so I have some Hunters that I have had for donkeys, but they are looking properly knackered, and all the tread has gone from the sole - and they are getting really slippery just walking across concrete on the yard - so new wellies are needed.

So what can people recommend for new wellies - I have seen lots of threads fairly recently saying how hunters aren't what they used to be - so I don't want to spend the money on new hunters if they are rubbish.

However, I have super skinny legs and ankles, and have like the hunters because they are bit more fitted than a lot of wellies in the ankles - much better for not getting sucked off in the mud!

What are the muckboots like? anygood - and are they waterproof right to the top?

Any suggestions would be lovely - thankies much xx

i have super skinny legs & ankles and these fit perfectly, never rubbed etc etc.

they are around £60 i think. had them for about 3 years now! i love them! wear them everyday keep my feet roasting with only one pair of socks. they are waterproof all the way to the top, the top is like diving suit material. and theyre designed to ride in, so dont need to change boots

i love them!

Well, not Joules, I have never had a pair that lasted a whole season yet.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one - I got a pair in August - lovely pink ones with HPR dogs on! - and they have both split near the ankle - very disappointed

I likes Muckboots as well. They definately keep toes toasty warm (well, was cold once, but only once). Mine have rubbed the backs of my legs in the same spot on each leg

But I seem to be the only person who's had this problem, so would still recommend them

Thankies for replies!

I think I had some Joules before - I think they were the last wellies I had before I had hunters - I think they lasted a whole 3 weeks before they had split and I took them back to the shop!

With the muckboots will the top bits keep off splashes of water - just not completely waterproof? Or will water go through quite quickly? Are they ok to ride in?

IMO hunter wellies are the best

I have a pair of the coloured ones and i love them, i practically live in them (i've even worn them into school, as was going on a trip and everyone else was in their trainers haha) Anyway got mine in reduced as they were shop soiled i.e needed someone to rub a cloth over them lol Love the fit as i to have skinny legs and ankles. Have had them ages now and they're still good!
Although i have to be honest and say the muckboots sound good and was almost tempted by a pair.

I would not bother with muck boots or Hunters, the tread on them both is very poor. if you want decent Wellies that last a long time and have decent grippy soles you should by Le chameau wellies. Some of them are very cheap - some are seriously expensive. The ones I have are now 10 years old and cost about £110 new. But that equates to £11 a year - and still going strong. They are 'Outlast' lined so are temperature controlled, and my feet stay toasty warm in even the coldest weather.

cattie - how long have you had your hunters? I love my hunters that I have - but they are getting dangerous as I have nearly slipped on flat concrete that isn't usually slippery just walking across it. LOads of people seem to have said that they aren't the same good quality that they used to be, which is why I didn't want to spend the small fortune out on hunters.

I have a pair of bright pink hunters and love them! HOWEVER!!! The first pair I bought as a replacement for my very older green hunter wellies were leaking (as I found out when I went pond dipping as a school trip!!!) the shop did order me a brand new pair and they are perfect!

bosworth - do you ever ride in you chameau wellies - or do they have way too much tread to ride in? I don't regularly ride in my wellies - but sometimes I will if I am just popping on.

ive never ever slipped on anything wearing my muck boots.

ive worn them practically all day everyday for 3 years, tread hasnt worn down at all.

do remember though, the muck boots cant have big fat treads on them, as theyre are also riding boots.

Personally I would never in a million years ride in any wellies. My le Chameaus have too much grip to go near a stirrup. I would never wear anything other than a leather boot to ride in as serious damage can be caused to the achilles tendon by wearing rubber/neoprene boots long term.

I've got a pair of CANE wellies which have a furry lining. They're lovely & warm & are a nice light blue colour (I think they come in welly green & chocolate brown too). I've got shortish, skinny legs & narrow feet & they're a good fit.
I wouldn't ride in them as they've got a fairly deep tread but then I'd never ride in any wellies/muck boots.

I've had my muck boots for ages. I used to work with horses and they saw me through a whole winter of doing work's horses, plus my own. That usually entailed trudging through loads of mud, puddles, snow, ice... mucking out, even power washing stables down. And NOT once have my feet been wet or cold. That's daily wear too, sometimes up to 6 hours a day.
I've used the jet wash on the hose to clean them down whilst wearing them and never got wet feet or legs then either.
In fact, they even wash well on the delicates wash in the machine, and come out great. Just don't tell my OH

(we don;'t tell him about the grooming kit, bits and stirrups in the dishwasher either

i recently got a pair of hunter balmoral wellies, i love them! they are neopreme (sp??) lines so keep my feel and lower leg super toasty and have not (yet!) had any issues with tread!

i have ridden in them twice (when ive left my boots at uni!) and had no problems although i know its not ideal and wouldnt buy them as an alternative to riding boot.

they were about £90 but IMO worth it

I loved my Muckboots, they kept me warm and were totally waterproof. The only problem was that they rubbed away at the heel and inflamed my achilles tendon (which I've never had a problem with before) and I haven't been able to wear them since! I was very sore and couldn't walk properly for about 2 weeks. I've just bought some cheap neoprene wellies from Wilkinsons for £6! They are nice and soft and not as rigid as the Muckboots so don't irritate my achilles tendon.

Hear Hear! I bought my Le Chameaus 3 years ago to replace my hunters, they have proved perfect for doing kennels (with my hunters I was skidding around on the blood in the flesh house like bambi on ice skates), foot following and for land agenting round ploughed fields.

The full length zip makes them easy to get on and off, none of the inelegant hopping as with the hunters, there is no buckle to get rusty and the neoprene or leather lining keeps your toes toasty in the worst weather.

I have a pair of muckboots ( the riding version ) for over a year and a half now and they are great. so warm in the cold weather and they are easy to get on and off. They stand up very well to daily use and ive had no problems with them. I would definately have another pair of these.

Probably 3 years now but cant't remember could be longer and they grip on them is still fab as our ban floor is a lethal kind of slippy sometimes and don't have many problems from lack of grip.
