I have a 3 year old very heavy cob, he is a Clydesdale cross and is 15 hands.

I have rode for years but i have never backed a youngster, i did not want to do this but i fell in love with him so i bought him!

However, he will not let me put the bit in his mouth, he is good natured and lets me pick his feet, he walks beside me and comes to me in the field when i call but he goes nuts when i try and put the bridle and bit on, it is just a mouthing bit with keys.

Any advice please

Have you tried having something in your hand like some nuts so he is occupies by the food. Then you might be able to get it in his mouth but be careful not to bang his teeth. Its also easier to just have a head piece attatched to a bit so its less to fiddle with and you can slip it over the ears quickly.

Once you get it in leave him in it for a while to get used to it but make sure he cant catch it in anything. You could also feed him in it so he associates it with something pleasent to start with.

maybe something soft and warm like a happy mouth? It worked for one of ours who diddnt like the metal bit. Some people put jam or honey on them so the bit is a nice treat.

Is he unhappy about his mouth? If so, you should get his teeth checked by and EDT. They can also advise you on the sort of/size of bit that would be best for your horse's mouth.

Try putting his bridle on leaving his bit undone on one side, then put his bit in his mouth once you have the bridle sorted. Check that you are not pulling his ears in a rush to get the bridle on that the browband is not to tight and that the bit is not to high. When ever possible make as much fuss of this head as you can, wher he is happy for you too. Sratch his ears around the poll etc. And yes make sure you get this teeth/mouth checked - Good luck
