About six weeks ago I took a very nice TB ex-racer on loan as his owner couldn't afford him any more. He's lovely and perfectly usable, but I just wanted him as a pet to go with my WB mare and pony.

However, he's not happy with us so I need to help find him another home pretty quickly. Thing is, how do I make him sound as good as he really is when the fact is he looks so unhappy with us? Nobody will believe he's nice natured and kind when they see him at my place - he's bitten both of my mares to bits! He's never been a biter before and my mare has been bitten non-stop in every home she's had in the past - but that sounds such an unlikey story even I wouldn't believe it and I know both horses!

So, what sort of wording would you use in an advert offering him on loan?

For the record, he's 8, 16.2, flashy bay and had a knee injury that isn't a problem to him in normal use but stopped him racing. He's very sweet towards all humans, puts up with my annoying dogs like a saint and has always been fine with other horses. He's just bored as an unridden pet and stuck with a mare he feels to need to pick on.

Poor Rocky, he deserves a nice home with work .... but I can't seem to get that down in an advert.

If he's on loan to you why are you rehoming him? Surely his owner should?

Just say he hasn't settled into his new home. Although 6 weeks isn't very long to expect a horse to settle.

That's rather ingenerous of you - I think the least I can do is help find him another home as a) he's unhappy here and b) he's gnawing hell out of my mare. I'm certainly not the type who would just drop him off at his old home with an owner who can't really afford him and then walk away uncaring.

I've had horses about 30 years and am a yard owner. Six weeks is more than enough for a horse to settle in with his companions.

I meant use the ad that you typed, and then put at the bottom he hasn't settled into his new home.... As the reason he's up for loan again so quickly.

I can understand you helping finding him a new home, and it's kind of you to keep him while you find it, I just meant that I was surprised his owner doesn't want to take control of where the horse ends up?

Tbh,I would ring owner and pass 'problem' back to her.....sounds like a dear sort, but unless you regard yourself as some type of charity, this horse does not belong to you.

I may sound harsh, but it rather sounds like owner has shirked responsibility. Is she aware that her horse is unhappy? I know if mine are unhappy whilst out on loan,I go and pick them up (did this recently,no problem).

I know peoples circumstances change, but if she really couldn't have him back then she should have signed him over to you.....that way,it WOULD be up to you to find new home.
