Norweigan hand cream is good but I like Crabtree and Evelyn Gardners hand cream, makes my hands soft but I don't do hard manual work so may not be tough enough.

Aqueous cream (really cheap about £1.99 for a big tub) slap it on and put latex gloves on top. Then you can still wash the horses. You can also use Aqueous cream as a soap substitute, which will be less drying than soap.

For the actual splits, get a tube of Lotil cream and sticking plasters and put them on overnight with a dab of the cream on the crack. Works like magic

Get youself some disposable gloves to protect your hands. Latex or nitrile that are a close fit and you won't even notice you have them on! If you load your hands with cream before putting them on it will really speed up the healing process.

Try putting on Hemp Hand Protector from the Body Shop before you go outside.

Unless you are allergic to lanolin - someone gave me a tube of this stuff and my hands have never been so bad, but other people swear by it.

Vaseline - smother your hands in it before you go to bed and then put a pair of cotton gloves on.

ETA - leave gloves on overnight, don't just put them on!

mine were getting really bad so I bought a pair of waterproof Sealskinz gloves! Hands fixed themselves once there was nothing to make them sore

I bought Norweigan hand cream yesterday for my really sore and chapped hands and it has already made a difference. My hands look and feel much better and you only need a very small smount so a tube should last quite a while

This stuff is AWESOME. OH is a carpenter and had really bad hands that were dry, cracked and bleeding causing him alot of pain.

This company had a stall at the Herts County Fair so he bought a tub and his hands are so much better. He uses it every day before he goes to work and when he gets home.

Seriously I cant recommend it wnough. I wish I before and after pics of his hands. They were so awful that he could scratch me, just by holding my hand or stroking my arm.

Any heavy oily moisturiser, petroleum jelly, even lard! apply generously at bed time, then put on latex gloves and sleep wearing them.

mine are the same so sore not far off crying i put e45 on mine at night lots off it and put cotton gloves on top not latex as will make hands sweat i found that NAF do a hand cream n it fab made for the working hand called stable hands mine feel lot better and bin doing this for days now

wow, thanks for all reply... i'm sure i have those cotton glove thingies lyring around somewhere!

and a few weeks ago i bought a huge thing of E45 with a pump thingy on it.... why didnt i think of it!!

you guys are genisus! (sp?)

Epaderm. You have to ask for it at the chemist. It's thicker and greasier than most other types of cream, but it's not as greasy as vasaline. It also absorbs more quickly than vasaline.
I have ezcema, so I have to wear gloves all the time as well, and because i'm so used to wearing gloves it doesnt feel right if i don't.

Aveeno hand cream or Aveeno skin relief with natural oatmeal and shea butter.
Although this is going to sound like an advert for the makers it started to work immediately not only moisturising but stopping my hands hurting as well.
I also like the norwegian hand formula and body shop hemp but I'd have to say aveeno worked best.
You can get it in Boots in the specialist skin care section.
Hope this helps.

Im with MD1 on the Hemp and if you get cracks and chaps on them try Climb-on Cream,

http://www.climbonproducts.com/test.php

Especially made for climbers whose hands get really battered on the rocks ( my son swears by it!)

Another vote for Climb On stuff here - I won some in a climbing comp at the local wall once and it is the best stuff ever!

(to buy in the UK - though never used that site myself)

Only thing that works on my hands (& there bad) is Eight Hour cream, sticky when you first put it on & takes ages to sink in.
But it's just brilliant.
It's multipurpose as well & lasts ages, my last tube lasted 6 months & was used everyday.
