I'm in an odd mood too? probably why OH just called me a radge bag :o

What would be a valid reason for a 14 year old horse not being broken? Im thinking in my limited knowledge, brood mare? and is 14 any age to start breaking a horse and (to many questions) is it to old. (for what?) you ask? Im not sure actually:confused: to buy and have broken in?

Just tell me if im odd?

Maybe been a brood mare, maybe nuts, maybe unsound, maybe owned by someone who had no inclination to ride it! Lots of reasons! If horse is sound of mind and body, no reason to not break it in I'd have thought. But I probably wouldn't be expecting high level competing! But then again, who knows! Very much depends on the horse!

Thought it was prerequisite to be odd around here??;)

Most older mares that I know that are unbroken are breeding mares. I dont agree with it,Id much prefer to breed from something that did a job and could pass its genes onto youngstock. However injury may have something to do with it?
Many racehorses get retrained, eventers go do pure dressage and the like but are often younger than 14!
But if horse is sound, healthy and seems to have the ability why not break it in,many horses live into their 30's these days so why not have a go? better than leaving to rot in a field or breeding any more unwanted horses.
IMHO;):o

friend gelded her arab stallion at 16 and then backed him, started his ridden career at 17 with great success. Some brood mares are backed in their teens when they have an empty year.

Hello Cayla :):)
Id say there could be many reasons. The main one as you say is the horse has been a broodmare but Id say this was more likely if the horse had very good breeding as otherwise she would be unproven, so her foals may be of little value.
Maybe she had been injured early in life so cant be ridden.
Maybe shes a fruit de loop and was never successfully broken to ride. I have a very knowledgable friend who has a horse like this.
Maybe shes just a genuine field ornament whos owner never wanted to ride her.

Did you lose you pass key to dogs?? :D

In my opinion, there are many reasons why a horse had'nt been broken by that age, brood mare being one, lack of knowledge, money, or they had tried and it turned out to be a handfull (nutter)
Tred carefully!!

Never thought of the injury thing. Suppose it looks odd me being in this room:p

Lol, cheeky:p it does feel odd being in here mind.....I don't belong:D
Again the nutter thing dort of entered my mind, hence all the asking:o:D
I did own a nutter and he broke a fair few bones in my body many years ago when it did not matter, not I need to work :D:D

Cayla - are you buying a neddy??

Im certainly thinking of it, I need to shed some pounds, but I can do that whilst it stands as an ornament, or gets broken in....lol:D believe it or not I already lost 17 1b:D
I had not ridden since I was 16, I should be looking for a safe but forward going horse but I keep looking for the type of horse I want instead:o:p

Also OH is hinting for a sprog, he also told me to get another horse (after such a huge break from owning them) and he wants to build a new stable) so I put 2 and 2 together and thought I cannot possibly get a horse......and get pregnant:rolleyes:

Ah but you can't just have one, you'll need a horse for you and a small pony, just to keep the horse company......... and to fit a sprog on later. :D

Don't be a daft mare then! Possibly insane / unsound 14 year old is a blo*dy daft idea:rolleyes:

Let me horse hunt for you? You so can have a horse and be preggers.... you can get that lovely girl from HHO to come and ride it for you

This is a very important point! You need at least 3... one for you, one for OH and one for sprog :p

But....that lovely girl form HHO will be rising it ;) LMAO

Ok...........im looking for a jet black (a little white permitted), cob type, with minimal feather, safe/forward going, no plodder than cant move, but just as a happy hack.
Hence you will see the very pretty 14 year old unbroken mare;)
I loan maybe a better idea to see if it can stick, but mind u once I have an animal it remains forever:rolleyes:

Dare I ask............................. whispers
What on earth is making you want to buy an unbroken 14 yr old?
