Blinking 'eck!

Well, it was more of a shuffling job, but still... :D :D :D

I didn't mean to. I hadn't gone out with any intention of doing anything very strenuous, just a forty minute walk... Suddenly thought 'Run!', so I did a sort of toe-down-first thing, but quickly changed it to the proper foot placement :D. It was on a slight down hill bit and I thought I might do it on the way back down the other side of the hill, but next thing I know, I'm walking and then, um, 'running' (and I still use the term loosely  ). I even did it back up the hill! And all the way down the other side. And along the road.

And! Whilst red and not particularly attractive, unless one happens to have a thing for a pile of sweatiness, I wasn't too out of puff!

I'm guessing it was interval training, though with somewhat bias towards the walking rather than the running and nothing more technical than me being pigheaded and trying again and again :D :D :D

I have to say, it was a bizarre sensation... lumps of excess me boinging up and down like demented saddle bags, but psychologically grinning like a slightly simple minded loon :D :D :D. Haven't run for absolutely years. Did get a place on the London Marathon, but found I had a wonky hip/leg and couldn't get past running about eight miles, so had to pull out :(

Thinking about it, Dizz's training regime is going well, with muscle and fitness improving day-on-day, so it's about time I followed suit! We have two camps to attend this year (August) and I'm determined that I will not fail my big lass :D.

Hm. Wondering if I should get a bike out as well... I wonder which gets one riding fit quickest?

Sounds fab - well done you! I find I get fitter with running, but if you have hip/joint etc issues then you might find the impact free exercise from cycling suits you better and enables you to continue it with less issues?

With some intense training Mrs M we'll soon have you ready for 2012 Olympics mark my word! :D

Glad your getting more mobile! :)

I've taken up nordic walking - walking with poles. Never could master the whole running thing but this is great fun, works 90% of your muscles (including your core - great for riding), you can still hold a conversation and have enough breath to shout at the dogs!

Not noticing many clothes falling off me yet though!

TP - good point. Will see how it goes and maybe alternate (this is presupposing that it's going to happen again lol :D).

K - rofl :D :D :D

DD - you have my empathy hunny :D

A - ah yes, I think I have a machiney thing that simulates Nordic walking... Absolutely kn*ckering if I remember rightly!

T - thank you kindly :D

AJ - I'll let you know tomorrow... rofl :D

Well done MrsM :D :D

I've got one of those machiney things. Called a cross trainer I believe :p I love it but it don't like me much :( I get off it after less than 5 minutes feeling as though someone has hijacked my legs and given me a decidedly dodgy pair in return   :p

Yay, Well done! The endorphins from running and cycling are better than a bottle of wine. Even better is the endorphs and a bottle of wine.
I took advantage of the sunshine this week to cycle to work x3, and cycle home once. (Mismatch in those figures achieved by car sharing). Distance 6 miles ish.
Now sat at home polishing halo and eating cake:D

Well done!!
:) I am aiming to get fit along with the neddy as well....
She will definitely get there before me although I'm doing well - I even walked to the swimming pool yesterday!! :D

Oh - and now you've jumped as well! I'm sure you were in NL before?

Great news that you felt like doing it - and good targets to aim for. Have fun with getting ready for the camp in August.

It has pee'd me off considerably.

I thought about where to post it, but decided that it was horse based, i.e. me getting fit for riding along with getting Dizzy fit, then the right place was in NL, or possibly Comp Riders as I'm ultimately trying to get fit for competing!

No warning. No explanation. Just whooooosh and gone elsewhere.

Huh? I appear to be back in NL.... I think... I'm easily confused at the best of times!

Right. Fitness. Best way of getting fit for riding? Cycling without a seat - I've seen that done before, but it sounds dangerous

Walking didn't seem to be doing it, so maybe that was my subconcious talking? Telling me to get shifting m'butt a bit faster.

See I can't even keep up - I only saw you in Soapbox first, didn't realise you'd been in here first off but now you're back where I didn't know you'd been :D. You've obviously also been on one of those big wonderful Swiss balls or whatever they're called! Or maybe a spacehopper... Are you feeling dizzy yet?!

Rofl - I've been on a Dizzyhopper if that's any good?! :D

She made me work so blinking hard yesterday! My muscles were still tingling this morning! So, the running (and again, I use that word advisedly rofl) is probably a good idea :rolleyes::D

But, pondering cycling... I'm sure there's a bike round here somewhere that I can use :D

Suddenly thought 'Run!', so I did a sort of toe-down-first thing, but quickly changed it to the proper foot placement :D.

OH picked up on this MrsM.... if you started with toe-down-first you should have stuck with it - that's how your foot is supposed to work! Sadly the last 30-odd years of footwear development has been aimed at getting people to run by striking with the heel first, when our bodies were never designed for this, we're designed to land forefoot first and use the ankle and calf as suspension with the heel perhaps just touching the ground. The cushioning in modern trainers is unfortunately a big con, and apparently more recent large-scale studies have shown that the more cushioning your trainers have and indeed the more expensive they are, the MORE likely you are to sustain an injury! Sorry for the mini-lecture (as written by OH!) :D

recommended reading: Born To Run.

But it was uncomfy and all jarry...:confused::(

Running in old Asics, so not too bad on that front :)

I was thinking of the horse's footfall as I ran (and I so use that term loosely!), with the heel down first.

Hm. Tyring to work out if I could run toe first. I was doing a sort of just-on-my-toes/ball of foot I think.

Not sure I'm Born to Run, more like waddle like a duck on acid maybe, and about as appealing . Will go look-see :D

Tell OH that lecture is noted and I will try and do better :D. Does he know which is better for the riding muscles - running or cycling?

strictly speaking running is better than cycling for riding muscles - partly because (unless you run on a track) when running your foot has to adjust to the ground each time it lands, which makes your whole leg (but particularly lower leg) work hard to adapt to the surface and balance you. By contrast, cycling works your leg muscles in a much 'narrower' range, and in a very linear fashion without having to cope with lateral movement. That said, as someone has already also mentioned, cycling is lower impact and so is certainly worthwhile to start with as you improve your cardiovascular fitness. OH often points out that when he started getting fit and losing weight, he didn't start by running, he started by hill-walking. He'd already lost 4 stone (16st down to 12st) before he started running, and by that point it was going to put far less strain on the joints.

Ah, okay :D. Thank you and OH :D :D And very well done on the weight loss :D

I didn't actually intend to run today. Had no thought of it whatsoever. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I'm 'allowed' to yet, but nothing seems to be whinging so fingers crossed is okay :D

I guess I'll just play it by ear :D. If it becomes a bit of a habit, maybe I'll mix it up with cycling as well.

Have to do something. The Dizz is getting fitter, and short of putting me on the other end of the Pessoa I don't know how to do it! :D Maybe we should go long-reining, only she gets a bit stressy, which is okay in the confines of a school, but I'm not sure she'd cope out on the roads and tracks.

I wonder just how fit one should be for camp...
