I have 3 horses. My old lad, Hadleigh, who is 31 next month. An old mare who was kinda left with us by her owner (Don't ask), and my new horse, Whisky, who is a stonking big wb.
Whisky has been here 5 years and doesn't get on with Hadleigh. He will chase him and bite him if they go out together so they are seperated.
This morning I went down to close the gate between the fields and cleaned and filled the water trough....only I forgot to close the gate!!

I have just been up to bring in Whisk to find them all in the same field. Hads is sweaty and has a small rip in his rug but otherwise seems OK thankfully. He has obviously been chased but has survived his Mums stupidity
I really don't deserve my horses at times. I feel so guilty. Hopefully he won't be too stiff in the morning as he also has arthritis in both hocks!!

I am sure it wouldn't have lasted long, then they would have jsut settled and grazed. Hadleigh didn't get to the age of 31 without being pretty smart and knowing a trick or two, or having a mum who has looked after him amazingly well. I am sure he will be fine, so don't beat yourself up

Its hard not to feel pangs of guilt when things like these happen, but these things do happen. You are obviously a caring and conscientious owner otherwise you would not mention it at all.
Like you say, they seemed fine ultimately and that's the most important thing.
