I went out for a hack this afternoon after the farrier had been and on the way back we met a lorry (the kind that have the big open backs and carry round gravel and rocks etc if you know what i mean!). Now my mare (she's 5) is excellent in traffic but at the moment we seem to be going through a phase where everything is scarey (she usually doesnt say boo to a goose!). So lorry stopped and i thanked him and then Ellie decided to stop and snort so he turned off engine (to which i thanked him again!) and i asked her forward but she decided to try and spin round (but i bloody wouldnt let her grr

). Now at this point lady that was in car behind lorry got out of car and came towards us and said shall i lead her past? I said no thank-you, it really wont help, but thank-you anyway. And then Ellie just walked (ok with her arse practically underneath her kind of scuttle sideways

) past it anyway, so no real big deal. I thanked the lady again but couldnt help but feel i had been a bit rude by saying no and that it wouldnt help! To be honest Ellie probably would have trodden on her or something, but i didnt really want to give in to her and not make her go past it 'by herself'.

I'm probably being silly, but just quite worried that i was rude as she was so nice!!

no! definately not rude. if your horse had trodden on her or injured her in any way, it would be a different story. If your horse needed a lead past, it would have been best for you to get off and do it your self. Well done you for dealing with it so well.

I once got stuck on a road with my pony who was napping and a lady came out from her house and led us past the bit she wouldnt move from...I was very embarrased but thankful that she helped.
I can see where you were coming from though, imagine if she trod on her, and there wont always be people around so she should go past just with you really. Im sure she didnt think you were rude, I wouldnt

As long as you said it in a nice way with a smile then I'm sure she didn't think you were being rude.

I do know what you mean though, you aways wonder if you were a bit short on hindsight.

I kind of rode down the lane repeating to myself what i'd said and i dont think i was but i was wondering whether i had maybe been a bit short. Then we met a tractor with a great big trailor!

And she didn't even look at it

If she offered to lead you past she must know atleast something about horses, therefore she will understand why you politely turned down her offer and won't think that you were rude.

I don't think you were rude she will have understood. Thing is, sad as it is you have to be really careful these days. At present we have a case where a lady offered to lead a horse past something 'scary', horse ended up trampling lady and injuring her. Now owner of horse is subject to a PL claim - not sure what's happened as yet (I don't deal with claims) as the circumstances were the woman OFFERED her help! It's a crazy world but you were probably right to say thanks but not thanks and, as someone said you could have got off had you felt you weren't winning on board!

If you had have said "Sod off you damn interfering Bitch! Who do you think you are?! an expert in leading horses!?" then yes that would be rude.

I think you were perfectly pleasant and in control. Above all you're home safe and that's all that matters!

HAHA, not rude

I remember having to get off "G" once, when he saw boats on the reservoir for the first time and the sun was shining on their sails. I didn't want to get off but it soon became apparent that this was the only option

Getting back on was another story, 18hh of stupidity.
A little old farmer type gent, offered me a leg up. To which i said "that would be great if he will stand still long enough. Oh and i will thank you now, because as soon as i'm on board, we're off"
Once i had control of said neddy a mile or so down the road

, i felt a little rude too
If she hadn't have been a little horsey i'm sure she wouldn't have offered
