We went training of Friday, and had major issues with brakes, after warming up in an arena, we went out, for the first time we was jumping out in a big field, normally in an arena i dont have a problem, nor XC.

He is presently in a 2 ring happy mouth straight bar, but on Friday, he was just putting his head down and tanking off, it was just pure excitement. But i have no arms left !

So what would you suggest to try ! please

i would suggest something to get his head up - so something without poll pressure, and something that he cant lean on.

Have you thought about a waterford? I have a NS 6 1/2 size one going spare

Great bits as the horse cant lean on them as they just collapse.

He is a 5 inch mouth !

Waterford ? interesting which kind ? i have a full cheek snaffle one !

We are fine when we have an arena, but out in the open, he is putting his head down, hence jumping flat, hence taking every bloody fence with me !

Hi Scoopy!
I would suggest a Waterford as well. The links collapse as PG said and means the horse can't lean on it. As fas I I remember you need to go up half an inch when fitting a waterford.

(might be on a loose ring only not sure)

Sorry, just re-read that and it sounds like i'm regurgitating what P_G has said. But still, a waterford would be my first try. I find a half halt in a waterford as good as stops him! (He's back in the snaffle now for everything following some brilliant lessosn

Do you think an 5 1/2 inch will fit, i might try an waterford full cheek snaffle i have, never been tried ! is it quite hard a waterford, compared to a gag ?

I have to be a bit carefull as he has such a soft mouth !

I use a Waterford Gag on my horse, he tends to lean and poke his nose and he used to be bucking bronco and I couldn't get his head up. I tried the gag first and rode him with two reins until he learned that he couldn't lean. This year he has completely submitted to me in it and I can now hack out in the gag on the snaffle ring (just one rein now) with the rein moving one ring lower for jumping and schooling in a Waterford Fulmer cheek. I really do recommend it and for anyone who doesn't know what this bit feels like in your horses mouth - wrap it around your forearm then wrap an Eggbut Snaffle around your arm and see which you prefer!!!

I should start the "I love Warterfords and can't live without it" clique - just wish the Waterford Fulmer was dressage legal.
