And, I was scared.

Out riding earlier on my mare, and mother on my pony. Both our dogs running loose - which is fine as we are off road on tracks and through fields.

We were admiring a new barn, and noticed that farmer had put some muck in a heap next to the track. I had just commented that I wouldn't want the horses to spook and end up in it, as it basicly looked like an open slurry pit/area. Mothers dog was just in front of us.
Before I could act, my dog was the far side of the pit, and heading straight for us - through it. I guess, because she was running, and is light weight, she got away with it. She did go under, but kept going.
All I ended up with was a fragile heart, and a very dirty dog!
There would have been nothing I could of done if she had gone under. I know it is far too dangerous for me to save 'just a dog', but by God, I would of tried to throw something in to help her. I did shout at her to stay, but she is of nervous disposition, and always comes back to me when she thinks she is in the wrong... some may say she was in the s!i7 !!

Phew. Apple shampoo works!

Lucky doggy! Slurry pits and frozen lakes terrify me. I know for a fact I'd go in to try and get my dogs if they went in, foolish though it is. I don't ride with my two so they are always on leads in the vicinity of the above.

My big dog ignored my recall to chase a squirrel once, and shot onto an incredibly busy main road. Luckily it was closed. If open, he'd have been a gonner. I dragged him back by his scruff and smacked him immensely hard and I'm not sorry either!

Lucky puppy!
How terrifying for you though. You'd think slurry pits should be protected or fenced when they are on or so close to a public right of way.
Glad she's ok! X
