i was playing at a polo tournament today- report to follow and i was watching one of the chukkas and it had just rained so farily slippy, not dangerously slippy but enough to put studs in. And this cuhkka was going on, not particuarly fast and one of the horses just completley dropped down, and what we thought was dead. It was horrible, the horse must have slipped- couldnt really see as was at the other end of the pitch, but it must have slipped or something, maybe fell unconsicous, we dont know but it fell and landed on the guy riding it. It didnt move for ages, so they rolled it to get the guy out, and it still didnt get up. people were saying why dont they ring the vet and people just answered well its dead they will just bring the tractor to take it away. So the trailer arrives to take the what we thought was a dead horse away, it just wasnt moving. all tack was removed, people were REALLY trying to get it up, but no response. So the trailer arrives and suddenly this horse gets up, it went from not moving, thought to be dead to eagerly (sp?) walking back to its box. It was horrible to watch as everyone really thought it was dead. thankfully the horse was ok, stiff, cut and bruised but still alive, no one actually knows why it went down but watching that really makes you think. I dont think they guy who sells tack there has ever sold so many studs!

Thank goodness the horse was ok, even if there was such a scare. I remember watching chukkas once and a horse slipped... it broke it's leg and was put to sleep on the pitch.

ETA - I hope the rider was ok as well

Awww that is sad but at least it seems to have had a happy ending i bet everyone was so relieved when it got up. Was the person riding it ok?

Relieved to hear the horse and rider were ok. Saw a horse get knocked out once when hit by a polo ball. Went straight down. Like you we thought the horse was dead but luckily wasn't.

OMG, how scarey. I know what that feels like

.

YEY he got up , maybe he wasjust a little concussed, or the taking off of the tack awoke something in him to get going again.

Hope he still ok

the rider was fine.... luckily in a way it wasnt his horse, it was a hireling, not that they dont matter as much as our own but i think it would have upset a lot mroe people it was his own. The horse has quite a few cuts on it and is lame,, but was ok and alive, which was good....
i think it must have been unconcious or something as it really wasnt moving and even when they rolled it nothing happened... luckily all were ok, just bruised, sore etc.

Horse was probably stunned.

Similar happened to me once when jumping, we took a corner to fast and too sharp against the clock. Horse slipped and fell over and I parachuted out, so to speak and threw myself off.

The horse laid there for 5 mins not moving, but it was stunned and unhurt.

Its not a nice thing to see, but at least everybody was ok at the polo game.

I hate polo. Big men on small horses with bits that rip their mouths and draw reins and standing martingales so tight that the poor horse can't extend it's neck out to breath properly, No wonder they drop down dead all the time.

This happened to one of my Dads p2p horses. He fell at a fence and didn't get up until they brought out the screens to put him down. he then proceeded to jump up and prance back to the lorries. He just needed a bit of a rest!
