A new pony for my son coming home on Monday

Ohhhh you bought her! I saw her ad and I thought she looked like a lovely pony - I tried a pony from this dealer and he was exactly as she said. Then a neighbour bought an absolute saint of a Fell from her for her daughter. I hope she works out really well for you all :)

Have a look at the Facebook page for Davies Leigh Jenna. She has a lovely trad cob whose mane she plaits in long braids, and occasionally in a cornrow plait on the top of his neck. She's done well in all sorts of disciplines with him.
Both very smart.

Ooh she’s lovely! Exactly what I’ll be after in a month or so, but a gelding…and he’ll be hogged and trimmed up - I don’t ‘do’ hair although I can appreciate it on other people’s ponies ?

Braver than me with all those feathers! We bought two this year, and my absolute ‘no’ was anything with feathers! So beautiful though.

I’d be trimming the mane, it’s possible to look good at half that length if it’s well looked after. Long manes are a hazard, can cause distress to a pony when they come tangled in things and you then loose big chunks out of them which doesn’t look very pretty, running free on a common/ hill/ mountain the mane wouldnt look like that! lve no objection to long manes just ones that are unnaturally long.

I don’t chop anything off but l wouldn’t be having a mane hanging down below the shoulder or a tail dragging on the ground. How about considering the weight of all that mane from a welfare management perspective Or maybe you wouldnt care if your neck was weighed down and you were under constant pressure as a result.

If my horse was struggling to support the weight of its own mane, I'd be calling the vet!

She looks very pretty, and kind. If you like all the mane, then ignore all the naysayers- plenty of people do manage long manes, so I'm sure you will too- and it is very impressive!

Plenty of ponies have long manes! This one seems to be doing just fine living out on the fells with a long mane past its shoulder https://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/new-project-to-save-fell-ponies-hh-plus-709788

I love traditionals and natives and have one of each but I will never love the manes. And because they have such nice top lines I really want to pull their manes short to really show it off!
