I so regret deep littering now!

I have a 12 x 14 stable and in three hours I haven't even managed to do a third of it. Whos idea was it to dig it all out today?! I thought it would only take an hour to do the whole thing

Poor Doug has to go in a cow pen for a few days whilst I finish it all off

Is anyone else digging all their bed up for the winter?
 
Soon.....once MoM and FB are over at the farm we will be digging out FB's pit and hopefully putting rubber mats down. Nice neighbour with a tractor and trailer will take it all away, along with the muck heap.
 
go see the local allotment blokes tell them they can have it if they dig it out
bet they will be like flies round a honey pot

I dont blame you - horses are expensive!
i was a hardcore DIY-er for years but then my OH offered to pay the difference from the DIY to full at our yard so ovb jumped at the chance lol
 
Yes I have a field stable and have left it as a deep dirt bed for my lad to come in and out of as he pleases. I have not touched it for a year and an clearing it all out to start from scratch with just a small amount of shavings on his mats instead of a huge bed.
He lives out 24/7 so it is not a major problem for me to do it in stages as he is not in it for long periods, so I am just doing a few barrows each day until it is done. But I wont be deep littering again.

swent my other half down stables on his day off to do ours on thursday he was there 3 hours doing one stable in the sweltering heat - ohh well I was at work ! - he going to do the other stable next week, then lay the new beds and start off fresh ready for the winter.
 
I remember it well, wear a face mask and thick gloves (otherwise I ended up with blisters even over teh callouses!) you just have to keep thinking of the time and money it saved you during the winter! It took my 8 hours to clear a 14 x 14 stable that was about 2 foot deep

Jeez Star eats half a bale over night!

Must admit the most I have ever deep littered for is a week. Can't stand it after that.

Generally I do a total clear out every day though.

Maybe you could save up for some mats?

If he's in overnight then no, it's not enough. If he's fat, feed soaked hay in a haynet.

I know it's a bit different directionally for geldings, but my little mare used to have a bucket full of shavings a day on mats. I put it all in one corner on top of the mats and she was a total, spot on shot with her wee every time. It was great!

Ooo that sounds like a great idea. I doubt pony will work out he has to wee on the shavings though

Hi! How's Doug going now???

BTW a horse/pony needs 1.5% of it's body weight in 24hours, if on a laminitic diet, so don't worry about the 0.5kgs if he's in during the day and out at night. He'll manage to scoff quite a lot when he's out!!!!

He is still a bit strange, hasnt bucked anymore etc thankfully. His saddle is slightly to narrow so it may of just been pinching a little so I am going to take the fish inserts out tomorrow and see if that improves things

Im just doing what is best for him! Whether he likes it or not!

His new home for a few days has hay as "bedding" for a cow that was injured, Doug is most likely going to gauge himself

I have this system, well similar, it's fantastic I have 6 horses in overnight and two through the day and I rarely even get through more than a bale per week! They have a smallish area, 3ft by 5ft and about 2 inches deep on mats.

Field shelter field shelter field shelter!

Tried deep litter, total ****ing nightmare - don't go there.
I deep littered during the week and did a full muck out on sundays.
Best thing if you can't let your horse live out with a really good field shelter is put down the best rubber mats you can afford and if you have your own stables have them all sealed and fitted properly.
Then you will be able to look forward to your weekends, not dread them.
