I cannot believe what someone has just said to me. We ventured to the next village for a walk this afternoon as there are nice footpaths and reasonably quiet roads. We had walked the footpaths on a flexilead as we were not familiar with how they panned out and once back on the road put on a normal lead.
As we were nearly back at the village two women (mother and daughter) and a lab came out of a field in front of us and the lab - off the lead - came back to our dog, the mother was half heartedly calling it back saying 'be nice, be nice' when with no warning the lab went for our dog. Our dog is completely non confrontational and just shot behind my legs. The lab wouldn't leave off until we yelled at it and its owner came over to get it, saying that it must have been because our dog was on a lead! - I said that that was really no excuse, but she got very angry and was blaming us. She walked away in front of us and let her dog go again and within a few yards it had turned and was coming for us again. She managed to grab it - just as well as a car was coming - and then yelled at us "WHY IS YOU DOG ON A LEAD ANYWAY!! - nobody in this village ever has their dog on a lead". She kept repeating this even when I said that it was because it was the law.
Up until then we had had a lovely walk, we had met loose dogs on the footpath with no trouble, and others who had been put on their lead to pass. Needless to say we will be sticking to our regular walks in future.

No such thing as a bad dog just bad owners....so true. I would say this dog has a history if she was telling it to be nice. I still think people should have to take a test before they are allowed to have a dog, or any animal for that matter. And she has bred....terrifying!!

Other people there must be nice though, villages can only have one idiot ;)

I know the 'be nice' only too well, when our old dog has selective deafness and would not come back after he'd seen another dog - he's all bluster and noise, but a total b*gger, ruddy terriers. He no longer does this though, and flexi lead is our friend :)

I'd have callen her bluff and pretended to/filmed her dog running at your dog and told her you were going to report her!

One of my labs can be confrontational sometimes, so she is back on the lead at the first sign of other dogs. I would be mortified not shouting at the other owner!

A sure sign of guilt is when someone becomes defensive like that!

I keep my 2 bordeaux's on the lead because of the way people react to us. We've literally cleared beaches! Neither of my dogs have ever been confrontational but because of their size and some people's attitudes - i don't want to give anyone the satisfaction of saying "another big aggressive dog...blah blah blah" I used to have a mini yorkie who ruled the roost here despite being the youngest and smallest dog! (She was stolen 2 years ago, no doubt she'd still be doing the same if she was around!)

If i had a pound for everytime a dog off the lead came over to us and was confrontational, as you've described, i would be extremely rich! :D

Another thing that gets on my nerves is when people pick their dogs up off the floor! My dogs are on the lead beacuse i like to think i'm a responsible dog owner and not because they are mutants who can rip leads apart to savage your dog!

Ignore that lady - she'll have to learn the hard way!

I mentioned last week how a lab came bounding over to us, I called out to them to call it back etc, they did not, so I let my lad off the lead.
Five minutes later the lab could hardly stand after he had chased her up and down the beach. I did ask nicely :p
As with a lot of these cases, the lab may bump into the wrong dog one day. And who will be at fault?

I think it's a great shame that you have to change your walking area because of an out of control dog.
Having said that, I must admit this is almost a daily occurrence for me so maybe you've been fortunate so far;)
Today we had a near miss with a Dobie. I like to wait for the owner and ask them whether they think the behaviour of their dog is acceptable.
I generally get one of two responses;
1) He/she's been attacked by a dog or 2) F-off!

Such a shame:(

I hate out of control dog owners!

Other day I was out and this womans chunky great Labrador came charging over toward my dog and smashed straight into my legs! Had I been a little old lady or someone with a physical health issue it could have been a serious incident!

Drives me nuts!

Gotta say I think this is a brilliant solution. :)
