Since my instructor came last week the destroyer and I have been doing lots of circles (in canter - yeah!!) and trying to do some lateral work.
He is an utter prat trying to do leg yield so last night I took him in the round pen to work on lateral movements from the ground.
For 5 minutes the little (big!!) bugger stood looking at me refusing to move despite lots of encouragement. Then sighed, shook his head at me and proceeded to do "rein back" the whole way around the pen from voice alone (i was nowhere near him, no whip, no touching - nothing). Then to prove it was no fluke did it again on the other rein.
After that from voice alone proceeded to leg yield both ways from one side of the pen to the other.

I was gob smacked and amazed at my clever bog trotting fur balls intelligence.
However anyone want to give me odds on him refusing to do it under saddle later?!
He also yesterday managed to turn the lights on in the barn, open his door and steal two sets of tools from our new farrier.
So anyone know of any circus' looking for a hairy feathery big footed pain in the bum to add to their list of performers?!

Archie turns his stable light on every night when he's in. Not even the super-intelligent horse next door who can undo anything used to tie him up, no matter what the knot is who can even undo clips (clipping the rope to the tie ring and tying the loose end to his head collar worked for 2 days until he learnt to open the clip!) has learnt to do that yet but my dopey Irish boy has and uses it to its full potential! Expect your lights on all the time from now on.

I reckon he might surprise you on the lateral work, now he's worked it out he might manage it under saddle as well so I'd give you two to one on a rice crispy cake that he'll do it.

One of the ponies in London used to let himself out of his stable and break inot the feed bin, causing a riot as all the others screamed to be let out too! His stable looked like Fort Knox with all the clips and things you needed to keep him in!

Someone taught him to do flying changes and he thought it was so funny to chuck them in unexpectedly for novices... norty pony
