Every now and then I hang a swede up in my horse's stable for him to play with. Having seen something (maybe here or on facebook, I ca'nt remember which, about hanging a sprout tree up. I thought I'd give it a try. I put hole in it, stuck a piece of string through it as I normally do with the swede and hung it up last night. (I have a short lead rope hanging down from the roof and clip hthe loop of string that goes through the veg onto it). I was quite pleased to see it all gone this morning...until I realise the string was nowhere to be seen. I'm pretty certain the stupid oaf has eaten it. He's never done this before

It's string, rather than bailing cord, a small piece about 4inches long, tied into a loop. I keep telling myself he'll pass it with no problems...He will, won't he?

if it's any consolation Mr P ate a load of his hay net once and he's still with us, i've seen all sorts of things in his pooh so i'm sure yours will be ok.

Thanks. The sensible part of me is saying this, the 'mum' part of me is panicing. Will just keep a very close eye on him. He was happy as larry this morning.

i had this! i gave Levi a sprouts on the tree/stick on Christmas eve and went in to panic when i came down Christmas morning to hide he had eaten the sprouts, the leafs and the stick part!!

but he was fine and enjoyed it!! think its just that part inside you that goes in to auto panic!!

All the horses on our yard eat bananas complete with skin. I hate bananas and even the smell turns my stomach so peeling them is out of the question. They either eat them whole or not at all!

But not as weird as biting the end off the banana then sucking the flesh out and leaving the skins in a neat row at the side of the feed bucket, which is what my old IDx used to do!!!

My horse at a plastic bag containing carrots the other year. I never saw it pass out, but it must have done at some point, because she was absolutely fine :-)

Sorry to digress but my old horse used to LOVE bananas even just the skins, which was handy at a show when I had one watching other peoples rounds and couldn't spot a bin!!

My old pony ate a towel once and just left a well chewed hemmed edge on the floor. I told him his hair wouldn't curl if he didn't eat his crusts. He lived many more destructive years after that.

We once had a horse eat a tail bandage at the racing stables. It came out the other end looking a bit worse for wear but the horse was OK. Actually found the horse with the tail bandage hanging out of its butt.

It has occurred to me that I might have to pull it the last few cms!

Mine once at an iced-lolly stick with no ill effects. She could eat an entire straw bed overnight too and I didn't skimp with the stuff. Changed to aubiose after losing it to her stomach too often.

Not a horse , but my greyhound ate a plastic carrier bag with some grub in it - the whole thing! The following day 3/4 of the bag was, er, blowing gently in the breeze, a bit of tug and the whole thing came out. The greyhound was absolutely fine.

If we're going to talk about funny stories - then I have a few! :)

Our cat (not a horse I know) once ate a 4 inch piece of string (accidentally) when playing with it - we never saw it again, but she's obviously still here & fine.

My Mother's mare ate the paper/ aluminium polo wrapper about a year ago, as she thought that there were still more polos in it, again, she was absolutely fine.

A gelding we once had, who was known to eat this he shouldn't, once ate a bit of plastic bag with some carrots & apples in it, he was fine. And I have even watched him eat a bit of loose (it wasn't on either) electric fencing tape (I did try very hard to pull it out his naughty mouth) but he ate it, was was fine! ;)

So I think your boy will be absolutely fine, don't worry :)

My dog ate a pair of tights - thick black winter ones. The came out the other end in one piece - it was suggested that I put them through the washing machine so I could wear them again. I didn't.

You probably don't need to know this but I ate string once (as a very small child!!) and it was fine. There you go, first hand experience.

I pulled a considerable amount of haylage wrapping (the plastic stuff) from my share mares behind once. She was fine. My old dog used to eat whole socks regularly... And we had to pull them out at times. The funniest was watching my dad do it!!!
