As some of you will know, I have a big grey ned, who I bought as a fat, unfit project in January. He has had some issues - we required remedial hacking lessons & loading for dummies and he has a rear in him. Oh, he can be nappy too, but all dealable with eventually. He's working now at elementary at home & I have just affiliated him BSJA.

Anyway I bought him from Cheshire. Turns out he used to be in Selby (about 5 miles from me). I was at a show a few months ago & a girl recognised him & started talking to me about him, saying he was nappy & not very careful SJ etc & asking me how much I paid for him

Obviously I passed it off & carried on.

Today, there was a lady teaching on our yard and she came over as Yogi had got loose. Any way, turns out he used to belong to a client of hers & she started off on a list of what was wrong with him. Rears, won't hack, was totally awful for her client etc, wouldn't amount to anything, had sarcoids, oh and a heart murmur, was bought for a lot of money and was sold for peanuts. Oh and how much did I pay for him?

SO I was a bit

I don't think she meant to be rude but FFS - he's my horse - I didn't ASK her for her opinion on what he was like before I had him. I maybe mentioned that he was a bit nappy but sheesh - she left me feeling really negative about a horse I have been working really hard on and just starting to feel good about.

I am cross at her, but more cross that it has made me feel negative about my horse

All this despite some really good comments from my instructor at the weekend & a good result in his first ridden hunter show.
Why is it that we remember negative things far quicker than positive ones?

Someone give me a kick up the arse please!

You should feel really pleased! All these people remember him as a difficult, problematic horse but with you he has flourished - you've obviously done brilliantly with him.

I'd take it as a compliment if I were you.

Consider me to be swinging boot in general directionof your posterior

You've done a grand job on him, so you should just be super pleased with yourself

. Bask in the warm glow of success

big kick from me.
i dont know why we focus on negatives either.weve had new horse for 3 months not put a foot wrong until tonight was a total pain and my negative thinkings kicked in too.
the answer is not to dwell on those thoughts as they grow the more time and attention their given,

Don't listen to them.

Everything these people have said is in the past and, by your own admission, he used to be a bit like that.

However, you have put in a shed load of work and lots of consistency and he has changed.

You should be giving yourself a pat on the back, not a hard time!!!!

Cookies and wine, chin up x

I know exactly what you mean, first time I took Roo showjumping, to our local show, someone came up and told me that she used to be at the yard she goes to. She said she digs her head into her chest and flies at jumps. I was like 'yes I know' and she said she refused to jump 'it' when offered, I was like :O, why tell me something like that without being asked.
Don't let it bother you though, sounds like you're doing really well with him, just because a previous owner failed with him doesnt mean you will.
Good luck,
Nickie

Well doesnt it show you how well you have done? You should be happy! You have achieved something which other people didnt, with a horse they wrote off.
cool.gif

Agree, take it as a compliment! The horse obviously hadn't found the right owner!!! He has now!

Well done!

lol - thanks you lot! I feel better already (though I have a sore bum from all the kicking

)

I just feel soo definsive about the poor lad.

Sad thing is I found out today he has had four homes in the last 18 months.

Don't let anyone get you feeling negative about your horse, only you know how much hard work you've put in. I've had a lot of problems with my little grey and always always get negative comments from people. This really annoys me as they don't know how hard it's been etc. This time last year I was considering have her PTS as she was nuts. I'm now out competing her and going really well, for her. Unfortunatly people don't stop to think about what you may have been going through etc. So I sympathise with you and don't let anyone bother you, it's your horse not theirs.
Sounds like you've done well with him and that's all that matters.

Dont let it get you down, had a similar situation when I bought my beast 5 years ago, it bugs you at the time but it will pass, just ask them to speak up, as what they said sounded muffled having their head so far up their own arse

So take him out and show the buggers what a wonderful boy he is turning into......and smirk whilst you do it!

Lol - that would be one way - I could fly round with a red rosette giving them all the bird. Not elegant, or classy but god I would love to do it.
smirk.gif

Seriously though - you have all made me realise I am looking at this totally the wrong way.
Poor lad has obviously been a bit ruined along the way - hopefully I can get him back on track.
smile.gif

I just get cross about people offering up 'advice' and info like that when I didn't ask for it.
mad.gif
That's horse people for you I guess...

Don't worry about what that 'Instructor' had to say, she obviously failed to sort out the problems her client & horse had......you are getting on with it, with your instructor & now you should have the incentive to prove to her that she's the failure
wink.gif
.

The unsolicited comments of that person has at least told you that you have quite a valuable horse, now you forget your negative thoughts & carry on with what you are doing & get on with schooling your horse. As for that 'know all', she should think before she operates her mouth...... you & your horse are nothing to do with her.
mad.gif

Just continue to enjoy your horse.

I like this approach!

Well it might have made you cross, but your story has put a smile on my face
grin.gif
. I read it as an unfortunate horse who has been pushed from pillar to post, who unlike some of the unlucky ones has found an owner like you who has managed to realise his potential against the odds in a relatively short amount of time. What a lucky horse, and what a brilliant owner! Well done!
laugh.gif

Four homes in eighteen months ??? Can't think why he had issues!
Sounds like you're succeeding where others have given up, and there are some people that just HATE to see that.

You should be feeling really proud!!! He obviously trusts and adores you and vice versa, don't let some busy bodys bring you down! Praise yourself!
smile.gif

QR - Right, NO!!! The problems they are talking about are the mishandling by previous "owners"...they are not the horse!!!

Thank God in this case this horse has found a suitable, sane owner. As others have said, far too many muppets out there - get out there with him and bask in how well he's going for you. Sheesh, some people!! Well done xx

Tell them politely you are dealing with the horse you have today. Not the one she knew before. And to butt out!

Thanks Toby_Zaphod. You may well be very right there (and have just said roughly what my instructor said, lol)

I should be less concerned about what random folk think & more concerned about producing my horse properly.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by everyone on here
blush.gif
I only wanted to have a bit of a rant - thank you for all your support !
grin.gif
grin.gif

You should have just said "This horse? Are you sure? There's feck all wrong with this horse, the problem must have been with the rider because I'm having loads of fun with him."
smirk.gif
grin.gif

Someone on here, when I was down in the dumps ages ago about my horse, told me the story about when they first got theirs and how everyone pittied her because it was so naughty. She then worked wonders with it and it turned into a super star. You appear to be doing wonders with yours so just keep focused on where you're heading; not where they ended up! My own horse is just making huge improvements and what keeps me going is proving all those people wrong who said I should just sell her and that she was dangerous.
