When I was out and about today I stopped at a farm with my friend where they had minis. She wanted to ask about a foal they had. When we were chatting the man said he had an English saddle for sale. He only wanted $40 for it (about 20 pounds???) so I snapped it up and thought I would find out about it later. Not alot of money so who cares if it is not worth anything. It is in nice shape and very useable and would be good to have anyhow. All it really needs is a good polish...just a little dusty. It does look broken in, but no serious wear and tear and looks very solid built with nice, durable yet soft broken in leather.Looks like a dressage cut to me???? but I have no idea

the tag says....
Moss stone & Co LTD.
The Eldonian
Knoxville
E.S. 1776
Walsall England

anyone heard of them????????

will try and get a pic up

Not heard of the make but if it is made in walsall it will be well made and good quality so deff worth more than £20! providing the tree is sound. Is likely to be english leather from walsall too.

here it is (remember...needs a polish, and new stirrup leathers

) I know it is not a perfect specimen and I know nothing of English saddles, but I think it was worth what I paid!

It does look old, but hads very little wear. No rips, no stitching coming apart...no breakdown of structure that I can tell. Should be of use and worth something to someone if I dont keep it...EBAY BABY!

LOL! Well maybe it could sell for "antique" factor

If it is that old (and as I said, I have no idea) It shows very little wear to me. Must have been lightly used and stored for a hundred years

?

still is covered with bits of grey horse hair here and there! lol

Looking at it, I think it could be a "Lane Fox" show saddle. I think these are/were popular for showing saddlebred horses & morgans. The very long cut back head is typical of these saddles, so I think you have an american show saddle. Does this ring any bells with anyone else??

Yes I agree that it is an American show saddle for Saddleseat. Not sure whether it is actually a Lane Fox.

The have a cut back head to allow for the high head carriage and large saddle flaps.

Riders wear a saddle suit, not breeches and long boots (as that is what grooms wore!). When riding the body is very upright sitting at the back of the saddle. The legs do not touch the horse below the knee, apart from the outside leg giving the canter aid. The aids are the rider's body and thighs. The hands are held high so as not to get tanlged in the unplaited mane. This is for Pleasure and Park riding - not for hunters.

just read the link and it makes PERFECT sense! That may explain the "knoxville" part in the tag. It could have been sold out of Knoxville Tennessee and that is where alot of that riding style is popular.

Prob not all THAT old then, just not a style many people there are used to seeing?

Hmmm..I wonder what it's actual value is

I did find an aldonian cut back saddle in black on an online classified for $350 with all the fittings. Maybe I could make a small profit on this....or just keep it for whatever........

ok....if I decide to sell it I am coming on HHO to have all of you writ my description! lol...I will have no idea anfd have to sound as though I know what I am talking about!

I wish I knew how to find out how old it is

I know the name Eldonian, I have definitely had one in the past, but I can't remember if it was any good! Is it very heavy?

Not compared to my Western leather saddles! LOL

Eldonian was a very well-respected Walsall saddlers, as someone else has said, it was bought out by E.Jeffries in the Seventies I think?
I have an Eldonian double bridle we bought in the late 70s for £30 (a fortune then!) and it's still going strong. You could also but Eldonian bits (before they were bought out).

What a lovely saddle, it looks similar to ones used for showing Saddlebreds and Walking Horses so it could have been imported for that reason.
I had an Eldonian pigskin saddle in the 1970s and it was old then and it was one of the best I ever sat on.

well I will assume it was prob from the 60's then? It was my first instinct with the writing style on the metal tag anyhow. It just looked 60's style writing to me.

I think I may have a little gem here for what I paid. Especially considering it's condition for how old it is.

My daughter already wants to keep it! lol She loves it because it is so much lighter than our western saddles (she is a little whiner
