In the last few days I have realised just how much I HATE livery yards
crazy.gif
Bit of a pointless post really but can I just say I truly envy those of you who have your horses at home

i totally agree, i hate the bitchiness and general unpleasantness that happens so often ie my old yard, now i have my own place and ive never been happier

all the horses are getting more attention and work as before i dreaded going to the yard and would wait till it was deserted rush in and rush out agein, as did one or two others (one of which actually used to drive past if thenumpties were there, go home and come back later)

This is so sad - but I do understand completely. We are at a really nice yard but one woman does ruin it for me. I have tried the "being particularly interested in her horse" approach - the "disgustingly cheerful" approach and the "completely oblivous to her being there" approach but not work for more than one session. It is like treading on eggshells -

I can see your point but I keep mine at home and find it very lonely - I have an outdoor school and about 5 acres of grazing but no hacking and no one to talk to (other than the neddies and dogs

).

I keep them at my parent's house but I would rather be at a livery yard with good facilities - although perhaps it's just a case of the grass is alway greener!

Me too - it's very lonely and hard work - sometimes!

See I don't understand this loneliness thing, there are many riding clubs you can belong to and the beauty of your own yard is choosing exactly who you share it with if you so wish. Also I have some help so thats another source of horsey contact.

I have been on livery yards and ime all bar one very expensive one have had problem weirdo's, usually the YO's or YM's.

I'd certainly never go back.

I've just left a private yard and am venturing back to the world of livery! Got seriously fed up having to do everything alone, including teaching a nervous youngster to hack! I know livery yards aren't perfect but i'm willing to trade up the silence for some bl**dy company lol! (I'm brilliant company ofcourse, but you can have too much of a good thing

i am not the least lonley. a girl i know who had a horse at my old yard has been hinting and now just asking to ride my horses out with me, i dont want her (not only cos shes crap lol) but i please mysself where i ride wen i ride and what im doing (like in pretty woman 'i say who i say when i say how mucxh

Id love my own yard and dad has said that he would be interested in getting a yard with about 10 boxes and he would do the books side of it if I run it for him which I think is a good deal only he cant afford to re-morgagage at his age and i doubt ill be able to get on so unless a deal comes up am stuck on a livery yard! and tbh if it wasnt for a handfull of ppl it would be nice but at the same time I love the idea of being able to ride in a an empty school when it suits me!

I have only been on three yards two of them not nice but the one I am on now although it has its characters i love it, there is no one i have to avoid no bitchness, nothing I guess I am very lucky I would have to think long and hard before leaving even if it was to have a place of my own.

I know what you mean, mine are at livery and I would love to have a place of my own with space for them. However, I always spend ages and ages looking for a yard and am really fussy, so thankfully I have been lucky enough to be on fairly nice yards so far.

It's worth remembering that unless you are very lucky indeed you rarely have the facilities at home that you do on a good yard - someone to look after your horses when you go on hols or in an emergency, people around all the time to keep and eye on your horses and your stuff, good security, good schooling facilities, someone delivering your feed and bessing and taking away the manure regularly, visits from farriers, dentists and vets, reduced price wormers, maintenance done for you, etc etc - it is a lot of extra work doing all this yourself!

In the short time I had Motor at Livery yards, I was fortunate enough never to encounter any bitchiness and I enjoyed the time there, however it was not good for Motor

So 15 years ago, I went it alone, however it is not all plane sailing, as having 2 'at home' together comes with other problems ..... pair bonding being the biggest problem ever

But other than that it is wonderful, although sometimes can be very lonely

that sounds great, however i was on the last yard 4 years until a certain person moved on, brought helpers, formed cliques, and made the place incredibly unpleasant. i had no plansd to move anywhere anytime soon but you cant stop other people moving on.#

YO was useless as was scared of said clique so notjhing was done about anything that happened

have mine at home but they do go into full livery when i swan off on holiday. it is such hard work doing 2 on your own during winter. i'm going to try to find a freelance to do 1 day a week for me. i would love to get out and do more, but OH is not interested and the nearest other horse owners to me either barely ride due to other commitments or work very long hours.

anyone who has had their horse at a DIY yard will have encountered the problems you describe. how about we all come up with some coping strategies. one of my best was wearing a headset and saying i was trying to listen to a certain programme
blush.gif
. you do need to know the radio listings if you want to pull this one
wink.gif

i keep mine at home. I miss having people to ride with - but it hekps me learn more and become independant to care for my horses. the only thing i don't like about it is the lack of a menage.

I love my yard, half the fun of having a horse for me is the social side
smile.gif

OP - if your friend is going to buy a horse why don't you look for a little yard you could rent together?

Mine are at home kind of we have a livery (grass type) with us and only a grass arena i think keeping at home would be perfect ifonly i had a floored arena

I keep mine at home, and wouldnt want it any other way, having experienced the bitchiness of a livery yard.

Its hard work, having to do the horses and all the field and stable maintenance myself, but the one thing I really DO regret is not having someone around to help me when I have a problem that I struggle to deal with on my own.

I don't get bored at all having ours on our own land, is just a shame we don't have and can't build a house on there and that we don't have a sand school - with a hilly field it is tricky to do any schooling!

Still, means we can go do the horses when we want, put them in what field we want, fence off an area if we want to and put jumps up as and when we fancy.

Don't think I'd want to be on a livery at all. Ok, so it can be harder in the winter when they're stabled but fortunately my sister and mum ride and we do them between us.

I think i have the best of both worlds...
I'm at a livery yard, but there's noone else there
laugh.gif

I have my three horses, a stable and i rotate their grazing around the fields...Just incase anyone else does decide they want to come to a yard with no menage, and busy road hacking...which invariabley, they dont.
I should imagine my nose will be well and truely put out of joint when someone does eventually turn up
