I think I know the answer but have I missed a better option

I would look at loan out or even a share?
I think you will find experienced riders who don't want to compete but don't want a plod. Some of the fun i think is bringing back into work so don't give up yet.
I took my loan lad on at 12 having done nothin but race. He also has quirks and doesn't do being alone in field.

Advertise as permanent loan/ sale, draw up a good contract & then a yr or two down the line sell for a £1. I don't understand the problem with a long term loan, surely if its likely someone will loan, get bored & hand back, then its just as likely a buyer will just sell on again. Failing that, I'd loan or sell one of the other two.

I think I get the idea but I'm not sure. This horse is a relatively young horse with probably 10 or more years left of it's natural ridden life. The present owner isn't the only one who can handle it, or ride it, and I don't know about you but if we were all so afraid to sell any horses of any age (and lets be realistic here, young horses can end up in dire circumstances just as easily as a middle aged one) then how would any horse buyers go about finding horses for sale? An old decrepit lame horse, yes by all means have it put down, but one who is sound and in the prime of his life? No that just doesn't sit easy with me I'm afraid :o
 
I think its a shame too. I agree with Horsesatemymoney, why get three horses when you can't afford them. A horse on loan is still yours and may still come back at any moment. People should think more before they loan a horse out.

If the current loaner will give the horse a couple of months, that gives you a bit of time to sell one of the others and put a bit of time and effort into getting this older horse going again and selling him. I can't see any reason why the horse couldn't be sold on - many people on here have said that he is the type they would have. I can't see why this horse must be PTS, it just needs a bit of work and effort put into finding the right home. Which might not be the easier or preferred option for OP, but it is still a perfectly sensible possibility.
