I think I might cause an argument, but i'll post anyway.

No I do agree its not hurting anyone , I just find it

<--- i'm actually pulling that face !
Ah yes you must all be 'chavvy showjumpers'

Of course I am joking , wear what you want aslong as its within the rules
grin.gif

What amuses me, is not so much chavy style showjumpers

but when you see the kids at local shows complete with jhon whittaker jacket - name embroidered of course, bomber jacket with name on back, pony with every piece of leather imaginable (studgard, flash, martingale) go in a 2 foot class and get eliminated

All the Gear and No Idea IMO

Everyone has to start somewhere but the money on designer gear would be better spent on lessons IMO

I don't mind them wearing all the bling and all the rest themselves, but it does annoy me when they strap grackles and martingales onto their horses and shove seriously strong and unusual bits in their mouths just to make themselves look cool.

But how do you know that their horses don't need them! Pickle is ridden in a plain cavesson for schooling but has a NS universal and grackle for hacking and if he goes anywhere new. He doesn't look like he needs it if you see him in the school but that doesnt mean he doesnt need it out hacking.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry I didn't make it very clear, i'm talking about people who I know only put these things on for show.
I used to go to a riding school that took in liveries, and many of them when going to shows would put all this heavy duty tack on, when most of their horses were pretty docile and definately didn't need them.
They'd ride them in plain snaffles and nosebands at home, and then shove grackles and gags on at shows to make them look like showjumpers
confused.gif

Some of them even admitted they chose certain pieces of tack because they looked good...

I'm sure some people just wear all that to look cool, but how do you know who does and who doesn't actually need a grackly or a strong bit? I know I need a dutch gag for Antifaz and a tom thumb on PF (although she also goes very well in a dutch gag); it means I can ride with a much lighter contact which in turn helps me keep a secure and independent seat. LOTS of kids here wear spurs as well, but as they all ride horses they do actually need them as well.
A lot of fads, like the bling, and the girths with stud guards for little kids are harmless (if amusing)

Oh, have just read this... in that case they're just silly!!

Its all about fashion! I do admit I have a saddlecoth with my horses name embroided on it for SJ!
blush.gif
. would never use it anywhere else though!! Sj is the equivalent of our local cheesy club, just coz I'll wear a pink mini skirt there doesnt mean i'll wear it anywhere else!
blush.gif

I went to a Hartpury college to do a degree and it was horsey fashion to the exteme there. Eventing was the 'in' thing and anyone who was anyone HAD to have an albion saddle, a breastplate and a grakle noseband even if the horse didnt need it!
smirk.gif

Coloured bandages were the in thing too, baby pink, red, day-glo yellow, the more disgusting the colour the more expensive and well schooled your horse looked (madness yes). The bandage thing got so mad that the really cool kids used to wrap exercise bandages round their legs instead of using chaps. trust me they WERE cool .
wink.gif

Ha ha funny days
smile.gif

I mainly do SJ and have my very long hair in a ponytail, wear an expensive showjacket and have my numnah personalised, have a martingale with a SJ breastplate attachment and never plait up (mainly cos my horse is an ar*e to plait!) but not a spot of 'bling' in sight, ie nothing sparkly!! I think people should do and wear what they want, one of my friends has those boots but admittedly not with diamantes and they are very smart. I wear a pair of equileather Saxons that cost £32 - I cant afford loads of bling! Surely all this bling isnt hurting anyone though, just different peoples tastes?

[/ QUOTE ]

No harm as such, but I think if you look smart and are kitted out in well known branded expensive gear people expect you to do well, and know what your doing and if you dont, it draws more attention to the fact

The bling doesn't bother me, though it's not to my taste. I do wonder though if too much more appears then on a sunny day the other horses might be blinded by the reflection!
I knew someone who said she was getting a grackle for SJ. I asked if her fairly green 5 yo needed one and she said no, but it looks good!
As for neckstraps I used a martingale on my old SJ even though he didn't need one. I was once using a neckstrap on him an dhe threw his head down so violently for a buckaroo that the neck strap slipped down his neck out of reach. At lesat a martingale will always be there.

no i see what you are saying and i do agree it draws attention to them for the wrong reasons - but they are chidren at the end of the day and pink and bling are very in!!

Why showjumpers don't plait - because we needs something to hold onto sometimes! Why the grackles and flashs, the nature of the horse, Showjumpers have to be buzzing and forward, forward, forward, but you can't get horses around a big complex track without total control. Why so many people love showjumping is it's about skill, it's doesn't have to be conventiation though, you get around the course and have the fastest time you win, theres no judge who doesn't 'like' your horse or the way you ride.

I think it's been said but - IT'S NOT THAT SHOW JUMPERS ARE CHAVS; CHAVS SHOWJUMP.

I know a lot of teenagers who parents are well off, they by them a very nice ponies or horse, they see what the whitakers are wearing and sell and said pony gets kitted out because if makes then look good, like the pros, the saying, ALL THE GEAR KNOW IDEA, springs to mind.

I think you'll find this happens in all disiplines; dressage, white saddle cloths, sheepskin half pads, black tack, a bling brow band... point made?

oooh and another pet peeve of mine....no harm done, just bugs me, is when people roll there showjacket sleeves up to elbow length

Errrrgh, whats the point xx

Sorry if I'm being really silly - what harm can a breastplate or a martigale do if it's not needed?

I admit if I am riding something I don't know or in a situation I don't know the horse in I often put a martingale on; like a safety belt.

Ps. I wear a simple white thong, it's far more comfortable and no panty lines. Under jodpurs, show shirt and jacket I can't see how people can see it up my arss!

what do people have against neckstraps in general? if people want to use a martingale/breastplate as a neckstrap, whats the problem?

I ride both my horses- an ex-racer and an 18 yo- in one- always have done. Good for when the oldie bucks and when solo starts messing about. I dont *think* im a 'bad' rider- Ive been riding for 17 years so have had plenty of practise! Its just a useful thing to have.

If more people thought about using a 'necky', there wouldnt be so many people out there with unsteady hands.

Gosh, you guys have me on this one. And here I was with a new horse (who is registered brown, but is black as the ace of spades except for a tiny bit of rustyness around his mouth and three tiny white anklets) and wondering do I go for a white lined bridle or would that be too OTT???
Or is that just old fashioned?
I'm old, but can stand the critics!
I look in the mags at current dressage horses and all I see is poorly fitting browbands that loop downwards with a lot of bling. Now is that the new fashion? Help! I know nothing!
I don't mind the bling...as long as it is in a music video! Is nothing sacred anymore? Of course, I remember when a certain California show jumper turned up in 1967 or so in "brick" coloured britches. It was a bloody scandal...and now? I see them in checks and stripes and zig-zags....some of which yes, DO make one's arse look big in them!

As for hair...this is a very important warning. Being from California originally, and also showing in Western classes, I didn't worry about hats when schooling at home. Seemed like a kids game to get all strapped into some bucket just to ride a horse. Yes, we wore them for showjumping...in dressage "head buckets" weren't done above a certain level. But hair? Well my long hair nearly got me killed the year I turned 50. My horse decided to bronk on me and my hair got in my eyes. All hope of staying on vanished. I spent 7 days in hospital, broke all my ribs. Please guys at least tie your hair back and use a net if it is long, just in case. You'd be surprised to find how much your balance is thrown off when you can't see!
Wear bling to be seen if you must, just make sure you can see when you ride!
Always,
Suzi

Absolutely right TF!!! If some chavvy boots mean my horse will soar over 1.20m fences consistently then BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!

I want some green topped JJ boots and I am not afraid to admit it
tongue.gif

I hunt in a hair net but SJ in a french plait (mostly because it helps keep my GPA in situ) - with my GPA I wear a Pikeur colour collared jacket - the uniform of SJ
smirk.gif

I detest named numnahs and jackets - they make me cringe. Bling is as bling does, each to their own but not my thing.

Riding with a neck strap is sensible, not something to be laughed at.

At the end of the day, does it really matter what horse / rider wear as long as they leave the jumps up?

I have a bling browband, wear jeans to ride all the time horse always has stable stains and starw in her tail, I ride her in a saddlecloth that has her name on it and a sheepskin half pad. Hair in a bush behind me.
CHAV ALERT

no I just don't see why it really makes a difference??
Show time: ( obviously I wear gloves but was very hot.)
S1050099.jpg

hmmm I think we look pretty darn smart?!?!

Haha - would never of thought of myself as a chav before - but I have to confess to not plaiting for show-jumping, my horse wearing a grakle and I even splashed out on a browband with a shiny brass chain across it at Bramham - so I guess I better face it I am a chav!
tongue.gif

I get called a chav all the time at my yard as I

a) smoke on horseback when we go for a long hack

b) NEVER brush out my horse's tail unless we are going somewhere

c) ALWAYS look a state (keeping clean and tidy is beyond me)

d) ride most of the time with my feet out of my pedals on a long rein

grin.gif

Yawn yawn yawn!! I cant believe this post.....

I'm a showjumper and i couldnt careless about what other people wore in my class.

I was jumping on Saturday and there were no "chav's" or whatever you call it.

Its about your riding not about what your wearing.
mad.gif

Well, my horse wears a martingale, and a grackle noseband....he goes in a loose ring snaffle mind you...he also wears matching 'ears' and numnah and a sheepskin half-pad. I wear a shiny vented hat...a posh jacket...and white (at least temporarily) breeches. I have NEVER worn a thong mind (chaffing sweeedy...chaffing !)
tongue.gif

I don't plait my horse......coz frankly life's too short.....and it's quite handy to hold onto sometimes
grin.gif

Does it actually matter though...I enjoy my SJ'ing....we are reasonably successful at it...and nobody is getting hurt are they
