Hi. I have never posted on here before but thought I would share this with you and see if anyone else has seen it before. To give you a general idea - My horse is a large cob - almost six but doesn't want to stop growing. The perimeter fence around his field is a double strand electric fence which isn't always on (mistake I know). Over the last few days I have found him in the next field (eating happily) but with no damage to a single fence post. We couldn't work out how he was doing this so this morning I headed up to let them out and watched while mucking out to see how he was doing it. What he is doing is backing up to the fence, lifting his hind legs (one at a time) over the bottom wire and backing through the fence ducking his head so that he can get through. Surprised doesn't even touch it. :eek:

Sorry this is so long for a first proper post but I was keen to find out if anyone elses has experienced this. Power is now back on to the fence so he hasn't tried it again this morning
 
I wonder how long he spent pondering that approach... that takes some thinking.

My 17hh horse will happily limbo under a fence when he feels the need, I now have three strands, the bottom one only 6/8 inches from the floor. I thought he was jumping out until i spied on him!!
With two strands too far appart he will step over the bottom strand then put his head under and quickly slide the top strand over his back - I suspect between electric pulses as he never seems to twitch while doing this !!
 
They are too clever sometimes. I think he worked it out by accident when he was scratching and lifting his leg to get an extra itchy bit. Next job will be to add another starand to the fence I think. He did work something similar out before when he managed to get out his stable (forwards this time) when he was chasing a feed bucket under a stable guard
 
iv seen a gelding at a yard years ago, practicly walk through the fence, neck follwed head, he lifted his legs up right under his belly and just stepped through! The fence was electric fencing (four strands) and plain tensioned wire (two strands)and of course as he went through it just rolled off his back while he stepped over the bottom bits, never bothered him whether it was switched on or off, but if it was on he would be a bit quicker!:rolleyes:
 
We also had a new TB at the yard, he was a failed(too slow) hurdler and new owners put up a second fence a metre away from the perimeter as it had worked in the past. Well, he found it all very exciting, jumped over the whole thing and jumped over every single fence (and one wall) through the eight seperate paddocks which were lined up side by side, ending up in the last one with the very bemused retired ponies, who took one glance and carried on grazing. I thought he was going to carry on and end up in the next town! Lovely scope though i must say, he looked stunning and after i helped to catch him and put him back in his own paddock, he never did it again, it was as if he was just proving that he could! :D
