My 8 yr old Rottweiler, Tommy, has gone to the vet today. We have noticed over the last week or 2 that his tummy was getting bigger and harder, and his ribs are showing a little and his spine. The vet kept him for x-rays and blood tests. She has rung a few moments ago to tell me what was found.

He has a tumour in his tummy about the size of a football, it appears to be attached to his spleen.

If left he will die quite soon.

If she goes in to have a look at what's going on he could die on the table because he is very anaemic. She might be able to remove it with or without the spleen, but this holds many dangers as the spleen is full of blood vessels and so probably is the tumour, so he could die from this.

I haven't had a chance to speak to my husband yet so I don't know what we are going to do. Every avenue appears to lead to the same conclusion - losing Tommy.

So hugs for Tommy please - I don't think vibes are going to help this time.

I will let you know how we go on.

Thanks.

Oh, that is awful - so sorry to hear about that. Hugs for you and for Tommy

Sending hugs to you and Tommy. Can't really offer any advice, other than perhaps have a really good talk with your vet and ask them what they would do if it were there dog. Will be thinking of you. x

Good luck!
My chap had to have his spleen removed due to a tear in it, not a tumour but he recovered really well and you wouldn't know now!
So if he's insured or you can afford it I'd say its worth trying for the op, i would expect them to remove the spleen anyway if its attached!!

I really hope he's OK though and lots of vibes to you all!!

I'm so sorry to hear your babe isn't well but hold on to this thought. It sounds very much like what Matty my then 8 year old Ridgeback had in October. I thought she was dying as I drove to the vets. The prognosis with her was very poor. She survived the op but had lost huge amounts of blood and took almost 2 weeks to recover fully. It was a fast spreading cancer the name of which I can't remember. Her spleen was removed during the op. She has just had a 6 month scan which has come back clear. Don't ever give up hope Hun but sending huge vibes your way.

First of all thanks everyone for your hugs and vibes.

Update is that we have decided that Tommy should have an operation to hopefully remove the tumour and the spleen. He could die on the table but for him that will be no different to being pts. But we feel we owe him a chance.

So hugs and vibes needed on Wednesday please.

Was dreading opening your post but glad you have given him a chance. As I said Matty survived and I know of another forum user whose dog survived this type of thing also. In both cases the tumor had already burst and they were bleeding to death internally. Let us know how he does and will have everything crossed for him on Wednesday. I have two Rotties as well as the RR and they will have all legs crossed for Tommy.

That's so good to hear. We just know that we owe him a chance. He is 8 and has been a really good friend to all the family and many of our friends.

Good luck for Tommy, I'd be trying the operation route too if I was in your position. If you don't try, then you'd always be wondering what if... I lost one of my dogs on the operating table and of course was absolutely devastated by that, but I had known before she went in that the odds were 50/50 at best. I don't regret it for a moment, it was important to me that I did everything I could to help her.

All the best and I'll have everything crossed for tomorrow

Good luck and tonnes of (((HUGS))) for Tommy, you and hubby for Wednesday I really hope all goes well.
