I think I'm being an idiot

My horse is on box rest with a ddft tear.

I've been doing stable bandages (vet advice) and not being big headed but my bandages are very neat (I get comments 🙈) I just use gamgee and normal stable bandages. Anyway my gamgee looks quite worn and it's hot so I bought some eskadron climatex pads. And I just can't bandage with them! They just move all over the place and bandage looks a mess! They had slipped a bit on good leg and legs looked a bit puffy again on good leg like a leg might look if you bandaged wet (which I didn't)

Is there a knack to them or am I just being completely useless? Is it best to put them on kind of loose rather than pulling tight and then just bandage normal sort of tension or what?

Thanks!!!

For long term bandaging I don't think there is anything better than Gamgee. Cotton wool is slightly more conforming then Gamgee, but Gamgee is a lot more conforming than anything else. If the bandage is stable the pad will last a week, so not as wasteful as cotton wool.

I don't find Fibergee to be conforming enough. I think it creases and forms pressure points.

I tried some Escadron exercise bandages that I think were half climatex and half elastic, for exercise bandages. I am usually hot with exercise and polo bandages, but I could not get these to lie smoothly enough.

If it is long term could you use a Tubigrip and stable boots? I have some FAB stable boots that are not the duvet type ones, they are a smoother inner with magnets. They have been good if legs swell, but i would think they would need an added Tubigrip for support.

Other than that, I would just get more Gamgee!

I find it much easier to bandage with the climatex wraps as they mild to the leg and are a bit more grippy than gamgee.

I presume you’re putting the towelling side against the skin? Maybe they’re better after being washed a few times I can’t recall what they were like when I first bought them.

I bandaged a lot when my boy was on box rest when he had an annular ligament operation. After a few weeks I swapped to Premier Equine stable wraps as were easier to put on. They’re quite thick though.

Thanks everyone they are second hand so I think they should be broken in so I don't know! I put gamgee on again last night and will try again today just because it's so hot! I will have a look at tubigrip but I think will be just as hot under boots?!

I don't like Fibregee or Climatex pads until they're so old that they go floppy! Then I love them.
Still prefer gamgee for a really neat bandage. I also have the PE pillow pad bandage pads, which are lovely, but very thick

I bought some Fibregee that was preshaped for travel bandages - and cut the top (knee and hock) bits off - much easier to bandage than the squares

I've only tried the eskadron pads - gave it up, I thought it was me being useless... they slip and slide and fold, I have no patience for that. For daily use, I bought Back on Track Royal Work boots instead. Love them, and will buy again.
