I'm the newest person on the yard
I'm a novice horse owner
And yet....
It appears I'm the only one who poo picks
I'm the one who checks the water in the field and tops it up
I'm the one who thinks that it's unacceptable for horses to be drinking out of green water troughs so does something about it.

I'm not there 24/7 so I can't be 100% sure on the above but it seems like it going on the levels of poo in the field and the dribble of water I often find in the trough.

Grrr - I'm too nice.

Know that feeling. I'm the only one who sweeps the yard, clears out the big barns, cuts back overhanging branches around the school and fixes broken fences.
Strange how some liveries leave the yard at night muttering about a broken fence ???? Or no water during a heatwave ? They must believe in the yard fairy too.

I was one of those too but i think the trouble is that if your slightly newer to horse owning thing then you notice the little things more...Maybe because your more aware and people who have been there longer or had horses for longer get lazy.
It's not acceptable to leave a horse without water no mater what the weather and the YO should be fixing fences and maintaining the yard.
However there are some liveries (and YO's) who leave everything to others.
f everyone took a bit of pride and care on the yard, no matter how may horses you have there, how much you use the facilities or how much money you charge for livery, then all yards would be a well managed, tidy and safe places for humans and horses to be.

I always seemed to be walking past water buckets in fields that were empty and was even late to work once spending my time filling them up!!!
It's annoying when you poop pick but the other owners in the field don't.
It's just laziness not sweeping outside your stable.
Why do people think its acceptable to leave jumps up in the school and not put them away?
When a fence in the field breaks and i can't turn my horse out then i would expect the YO to fix it ASAP not leave it a week etc etc

Come on people, stop being lazy and have a bit of pride.

Agree about the responsibilites of the YO, but ours is a frail, partially sighted old lady. She is great and has men in to do repairs, but the reality is, that when something happens in the evening, when its possible, I'd do a running repair to make the area safe - or put horses in another field. I wouldn't just moan and go home. On another yard with a full time, healthy YO, it might be different as someone would be around and have immediate resources to fix problems.
My feeling is that my horses are my responsiblity so try to ensure their environment is safe and pleasant. When problems occur, like burst pipes,no water etc. you don't just shrug and walk away. Take emergency action and then get YO to sort it as soon as possible.
We get cheap livery, we know what the yard is like, so its fair enough.
I just hate sweeping up after everyone when they've had the farrier or been clipping.

My OH IS the yard fairy. Without him it would grind to a halt or fall to pieces.

In the last two months (among many, many other things) he has fixed the grain mill and welded together a support for it, meaning the wheel barrow now fits underneath it and feed time has been halved. Previously it was balanced over an old bath and was so unstable it jammed every five minutes.

He has also installed two automatic water troughs (bodged together, but perfectly serviceable) meaning the horses are now NEVER without clean water when someone forgets/can't be arsed to drag the hosepipe around the paddocks and fill the containers!

Exactly horserider, your fed up of sweeping up clippings...if everyone took a bit of responsibility and pride, didn't have the attitude that someone else will do it or it's not my job then yards would be a better place for both horses and humans.

I bought my own elec fence and post clips as i was fed up of waiting for the YO to fix a fence that had frayed and snapped due to the wind.
I had to put away jumps after another livery had used them and left them out.
I filled up other peoples water buckets as they had left their horses without water on hot days...i'm not apologising for being someone who can't see horses without water.

There are "doers" and "leavers" and I'm afraid it's always the people who leave things that are the moaners. The people who just get on with it and fix things are the un-thanked few!!!

Pride is the definitely alot to do with it. Me and hubby have wings keep our barn swept out, sweep round to the muck heap, poor pick etc whilst others around us don't :( yes at times it annoys me but i suppose its just the way it is. My boys are well looked after and that's what matters

I got so fed up of other people's mess that I wrote a note on the wee blackboard stating that the yard fairy had been found dead and they would all have to muck in and tidy up. Worked for a good hour, too.

I've just moved mine to a place where I'm the only grazer at the moment - I spent yesterday sorting loose elec fencing wires, pulling poisonous plants and after giving my Clydie a bath and detangling her shoulder length mane made sure I didn't even leave a piece of hair lying around. It's lovely knowing that my yard will be as clean when I go in in the morning as when I left tonight.

One place I was at the YO thanked me for sweeping up after my farrier and I was surprised when she said no one else did - I just do it out of respect to the YO and to others. I hate trying to clean up my horse on a messy floor.
