Over the last few weeks Inky has been very lethargic. He shows little interest in anything and doesnt even really bat an eyelid when the mares walk past him ( he's a 2 yr old colt ) He is eating well and everything else is normal ( poos, wee etc... ) he has been wormed and teeth checked and has no other symptoms. He just trundles along to the field and doesnt even play about anymore which is very unusual for him. We went to a show yesterday and he was very "flat" i.e. no presence about him, couldnt be bothered and everyone thought he was a gelding he was so laid back. I thought it might make him perk up alittle as we havent done a show for a while but it didnt

I know its nice to have a very well behaved colt but im worried because its so out of sorts for him ( not that he isnt well behaved, he is, just he is usually very alert ) but ive no idea what i can do about it??? Im not sure whether the vet would laugh at me if i called them?
Im not sure whether there is anything i can give him to pick him up abit.He seems very tired and i dont know why. Any ideas on what may be wrong or what i can do to help him??

Thanks a very worried Mrs_stinkbomb

My chap has been the same but I'd put it down to the hot weather and increased workload but I've since discovered that he's been anaemic. Vet suggested a B vitamin supplement and he seems to be back to his normal cheeky ways now.

Perhaps a Vet visit and takes some bloods .... even if it does not find anything, like a low grade infection, it is a good 'starting' point for any future times that you may need them.

The first time I had bloods done on my old boy was when he was 24 and all the levels were all over the place, as he was very ill at the time, but as I did not know what his 'norm' was it was always something that I had wish I'd had, if you see what I mean

I expect it is just the weather, but you know your pony and if you feel he is 'not right' then the Vet will support you all the way

silly question i know, but he isn't the only miniature where he's kept, is he? are all the other horses full size, i mean?
a friend bought a miniature and kept it with all her full-sized horses and ponies, and my trainer told me it was cruel, that they need one of their own size to relate to, otherwise they can get very depressed. just a thought, anyway.
blood tests and lots of tlc, i guess! hope he perks up soon.

I'd consider getting some bloods done. Mine got a virus as a 4yr old and went from a hooligan to the world's nicest horse! Whilst I was happy I knew his behaviour wasn't right from him. My vet believed me and ran bloods and he had a virus. Easily treated and he was soon back to his awful self!

oh, right, sorry. he isn't just a bit lazy because of the heat etc, is he? some of mine are being right slobs at the moment... went down the field earlier and 5 out of 6 were flat out on the floor, it was like a game of Dead Lions!
if you're really worried i'd get bloods done, but if he's just a bit calmer than usual i'd be really glad and take advantage of it to do a bit more!

mine was really 'down' when i moved yards and eventually called the vet and he had a virus and anemia... if you think somethings not right i'd get the vet to do some bloods whilst its nice when they start to behave you know when somethings not quite right and most vets trust owners opinions on these things.

good luck hope he picks up soon.
