I got my new horse on Saturday appart from being like a hat rack & the lice & rain scald im very happy with him.
I had a text off his previous owner asking for money for his keep for the five weeks its been since i put the deposit on him! I paid for his castration, £50 fuel and what she asked for him. Should i pay? No amount has been mentioned. With the amount of weight he lost in that time he hasnt been living in the lap of luxury!!

tell her to sod off!!! you put a deposit on not paid for him in full. unless you previously agreed to pay for the keep i wouldn't be paying a penny

Tell her in no uncertain terms to Pi$$ right off......... he doesnt sound like she has spent a penny on him in the last 5 weeks........... Or just ignore her completely!!

No i wouldnt pay her . Tell her that with the weight he has lost since you paid the deposit its going to cost you more money than you anticipated getting him back to a decent level of condition. You could offer to pay for his keep for the five weeks if they pay for the exta money your going to have to spend on feed and lice treatment etc which is going to be a considerable amount more!!
Some people amaze me!

I think you might say that it is not considered normal practice for keep to be paid. You paid a deposit, and the horse is not yours until paid for in full, unless there was a previous agreement as to keep.

Don't pay, never heard of this before. What a cheek.

Absolutely, take the above advice. How dare she, money grabbing swine.

She mentioned nothing about his keep when i paid the deposit. I paid for his castration at the same time and as we didnt know exactly how much it would be, i said if that was any more i would give it to her. I did, an extra £20 on Saturday because he stayed the night at the vets.

Hi,

Hmmmmm, It is a bit late to ask AFTER the horse has left the yard I feel.

If nothing was arranged about payment for keep then pay nothing if you are happy with that, the seller should have made it clear that keep would be extra. I don't see how the castration costs make any difference though.

To be fair though, feeding a horse at this time of year isn't exactly cheap, she was foolish not to have made arrangements at the time, her loss really, I bet you were surprised at getting free keep for that long, I would have been!

Personally, I charge keep for horses after one weeks' goodwill (on deposit, or paid in full, it doesn't matter) why should I pay out to keep someone else's horse at my expense? If a buyer doesn't agree then they can always pay in full and take the horse away, their choice. After getting bitten last time I will only hold a horse on deposit for 2 weeks anyhow unless a payment plan (including keep) has been agreed upon.

Say, for a 15h QH, living out, 1 x $3 bale of hay per day, + grain, + my time, cheap at $35 p/w

For 5 weeks that would be $175 I'd be a complete mug (as a seller) not to come to some arrangement over board.

If she had said at the time i left the deposit that she wanted me to pay his keep fair enough. If she had fed him and not starved him i probably would have offered her something. Its going to take a long time to get him in good condition.

i actually think you should pay keep
5 weeks is a long time.
i agree with above as in 1 week good will anything over
you should be charged.

I think you need to explain to her what the word 'deposit' means, then tell her in a polite way (should you prefer) to take a hike!

I would tell her to sod off too! I kept a filly I sold for 3 weeks for someone as they were going on holiday, she did offer me some money for livery but in all conscience I did not feel I wanted it so did not take it, I was just pleased that the filly had found the perfect new owner tbh.

Er no, definately not! I sold a horse, the person came to pick it up - due to the transporters stupidity the woman got hurt, meaning the horse came off the lorry and had to stay with me another month. I did not charge her for his keep, even though it cost me to keep him for that extra month.

All its cost them is a bit of haylage, its a stud but not the one who bred Nico, hes been out with another yopungster. Funny how you can be misled, i thought they were OK and the rest of the horses were in good condition, but once Nico was sold i dont think they fed him at all. He wasnt in brilliant condition when we viewed him but that was nothing to the state he is in now. Its taken so long because we couldnt have him until he was a gelding, and with the snow the vet couldnt get there for ages. I asked them before i even went to see him if theywere happy to get him gelded and keep him until it was done and they said yes.

When I bought my horse the owners kept him for an extra month, I think, until a stable was free at my yard. They were happy to do so, didn't charge me anything, and even delivered him to me! (Although I did pay for the diesel!)

We have been talking to her vet about Nico he said how poor he is, he also said tell them to have a word with him as he will soon tell thm what a state the horse was in, he almost refused to castrate him he is so bad!!
