Hi there everyone. I view of the recent spate of horse deaths on our roads I think it is about time we made a statement. The responses from jo public on the newspapers forum are wholeheartedly disgusting in the main. I feel we should educate (nicely) the public. I am in the south west and would love to organise a massive ride for road safety. Obviously I can't cover the whole of the UK - but do other people feel this is a good idea?
 
Yep i am also in the south west and i think it is a very good idea!!.Too many riders/horses are losing thier lives on the roads.

Also in the SW and think it is a good idea, but how many drivers would listen? I was going to my local Parish Council meeting to educate them, but my bro who is a member said there is not point as no one would listen.
 
I would certainly be up for it but unfortunatly I am not in the south, so unless one can be organised for different parts of the uk then i cant get to one

We could create a comittee - and organise different areas. I know we may be banging our heads against a brick wall - but if we did it properly I think we would have some effect. Handing out BHS leaflets - I'm sure they do some pretty effective ones. If we all get together and stand tall for our right. It would seem ( maybe its been like it for a while and I hand't realised) that some motorists feel that we should only ride in the field, some feel that horses on a national limit road should still be passed at 60 mph and others feel it is unacceptable for riders to ask motorists to slow down - when in all honesty it only takes a few seconds out of they're day. Theres good and bad in all, and really we just need all road users to have mutual respect for each other - and maybe if we all got together on a mahoosive ride with proper guidence leaflets , maybe , just maybe we could educate some of them.
 
It does sound like an excellent idea, some of these numptey's need to be educated, to be fair the majority seem to use their heads but there are enough out there who are down right dangerous
 
Great idea... if rides could be organised on the same day but all over the country and lots of publicity generated i.e. on local TV news with cameras covering the events... plus a ride in the centre of London up to No 10 to deliver a petition signed by as many people as possible. Get celebrities who ride involved - Madonna, Richard Hammond, The Queen (well if she's not too busy), plus our top horse sport competitors... do it all for charity as well. Sounds fab - who's up for organising it?

Actually thinking about it the BHS should be organising it... but then again given their track record if we left it to them it would never happen.
 
We would want a summer date, make the most of british weather.

If the events are too take place in different areas mulitple people will have to take some sort of leadership whilst working together.
 
Yep - ok all sounds like you are up for it - and I'm sure people would be - so lets go for it - a summer date but not scorching - so maybe June - what do you recon? I think we need a comitee - so who would like to join that ? Then from the comitee we need regional organisers - obviously I'll do this area - south west - but whos up for taking on other areas ? Yep we can get press cover and we can get the BHS to help us with advisory material to give out on the ride - get big maufacturers to sponsor us therefore covering the cost of the leaflets. So those of you who are up for joining the commitee please pm me
 
As soon as i find a trusty steed, yes i will be up for that.
The more we can do for the safety of our horses the better. It is mostly ignorance that causes the trouble. Anything we can do to help, has to be a bonus
 
One of the things we have been doing for a while is to encourage the Access Departments of the local County Councils to do more for the provision of off road riding tracks for local horse riders covered by their area.

We have an annual award system and those that provide more facilities or improve existing ones receive an award.

We also have road safety courses and tests to provide skills for horse riders when riding on the roads.

A number of off road long distance horse riding routes have been developed accross the country and there are more in the planning as well as feeder routes to them. We are also looking at the provision of local circular routes and feeder routes from individual yards where horses are kept.

All this takes time and money however we are committed to get more off road riding facilities for horse riders.

Your support is welcome and you could do several things - join the BHS (the more members the better) and also join your local county BHS committee and provide input as to what you need.

The more members there are the more horse riders the BHS can demonstrate that they represent when negotiating with national and local government and also the revenue from membership fees can be used to improve the services provided to horse riders.

There is a local BHS group in nearly every county of Great Britain and each group contains a Road Safety officer, Bridleway Officer, Welfare Officer and Training officer all of which would be only too pleased to help you with any issues you may have.
 
Thanks owlie - I take it your part of the BHS? I am a member *halo shining* but have recently been sooooo shocked when I 've gone onto public forums and seen the responses about horses on the roads. Dare I say it but a certain % of Jo public seem to have a shocking attitude and I just want to politely educate them
