he is a 15 yo cocker. pood in his bed this morning, has been wobbly on his legs for the last year or so, all but totally blind and deaf now and didn't eat his dinner (usually has a huge appetite)

I helped him out to the garden earlier and he wandered around and managed to toilet, but really seems off colour and has heavy breathing and looks frail.

do small animal vets do call outs? I don't want to take him to the vets for the inevitable, I don't want his last moments to be in a place he doesn't like.

I love this little guy :(

So sorry - my old (14) cocker went off his legs and died within a few minutes (first thing in the morning while I was getting dressed to take him to the vet). Most vets will come out for this sort of situation, just ask - hefty bill though :( How is he now?

I would get your vet out to him this morning, if he is still with us. :-(
It is expensive, but so much nicer for an old, deadf, blind and confused dog than being taken somewhere with scary smells.

Agree totally with Clodagh. Mine are always put down on their sofa and if you have other pets, do let them say goodbye in their own time.
As to disposal, if you have a garden you can bury him (ours always get wrapped in a blanket and if they had toys, those go in with them too, same with collars) or you can ask the vet to take him with them for incineration (but do tell them this when you book the callout else they might not have room in their vehicle which makes it more upsetting for you) Sorry if it sounds too matter of fact for you but it honestly does help if you have it sorted in your own mind what you want/need done and I find it gets me through it all then I curl up and howl like a baby.

15 is a grand age, same as Wish was and if I'm honest, I kept her going too long, for my benefit not hers and I still feel guilty about that, I wouldn't do it again.

My vet came out to put my Lab to sleep. Couldn't bear the thought of her last minutes being in the vets. She went in my arms with our 2 other dogs supporting her.
Sorry you're having to go through this...

How sad :(

Ours are always PTS at home. Our old man is 16 and is steadily going down hill BUT he still gets some pleasures out of life and eats well etc, just he's in his own little world a lot of the time and his back legs are starting to fail him :( It's sad to see and, for the moment we are letting him be as he seems content.

He will not go to the vets though as in the past few years he has found this very very stressful so, when his time comes he will be PTS at home.

my old man (15yrs) is fine and dandy, I am lucky he loves coming to the vets so I would take him in, my next old man (13yrs) is fine and dandy too but hates the vets i will get them to come out for him if possible and my young (6yrs) lady will be the same at home-depends on the dog, the vet and the circumstances.

how are things OP

My gorgeous baby is an 18 years old jack russell that has been my baby since she was 10 weeks old, she is growing old in front of my eyes, her back legs are giving way, she cant hear much but she still smiles with a curled top lip!! I know our time together is short, l love her so much but i will do the deed at home in our bed!!! I will get my vet out so that she goes to sleep with me and her husband pickle , my other 5 year old jack ! I am not sure how pickle or I will cope but she is our priorty. My vet has said for the last 6 years how he is surprised she is still around and that he will be there for us.
l am just cherishing ever minute, hour and day with my baby.
Our gorgeous pets getting
old is rubbish !!

Sorry OP, just couldn't leave this without saying how sorry I am that you're obviously facing a very difficult decision.

My old dog is visibly ageing, and is drinking a lot............:( - and I know that in the quite near future I may have to make a difficult choice for her. I'm not one to run in to the vets every time the dog sneezes; she's a rescue, we don't really know exactly how old she is - and want to make the time she's got left as pleasant as possible without all the hassle of bloods, tests, medications etc etc. Yes I know I'll get criticised on here for that statement, but she's been through a lot in her life and at the moment to have a vet poking around will only stress her up when she needs it least - and when the time comes, and that may be sooner rather than later, we'll have to make the same choice that OP is having to.

How is yours OP?

Hi everyone, thank you for your kind words of support. couldn't face coming back until now. Sadly it was clear throughout Saturday that he wasn't going to improve, so my mum and brother took him into the vets on saturday afternoon (mum couldn't face having it done in the house, and the poor dog had little idea what was going on by then). I'm so glad my mum and brother were there with him, I feel guilty I wasn't, but I just couldn't face it.

He's gone to be cremated. My brother and I are going to scatter his ashes on the ridge, his favourite walking place.

Thank you again for all your kind words.xx

It's tough isn't it - hopefully before too long you can start to remember the good memories of him when he was young and active. Shame they don't live long - RIP old chap.
