My post box is attached to the fence around my garden and doggies always go bounding up to the postman . One woofs and jumps up but not bitey or anything.

The postman just came, done lolloped over and woofed, I saw the postman bend over the fence to him, heard a squeak and that was it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats nice! maybe you should move your post box and then there will definately be no come back for you.. he could easily do it again and then your dog bite him or accidently hurt him and he could report it.. Your word against his then!

I once had a gas man come to read the meter and my dog got a bit huffy and ran out and paraded around him, barking and he told me if she ever did it again he would report me for having a dangerous dog!

My old girl broke free one day and got the postman in a corner, she didn't touch him but was standing off him, barking, looked like a pro, even though she'd never been trained for it and was usually as soft as butter.
Let's just say the postman wasn't the one that did the smacking!

As you didn't actually see him make contact with the dog, there is little you can prove - would the dog have squeaked if he had make a harsh noise or one of those sonic anti-dog devices?
I am not condoning anyone smacking your dog, just playing Devil's Advocate.

I read that somewhere that postmen and other delivery men cause problems because they are some of the very few people that come to your property - the dog barks and makes a fuss - and they go away again.

Dog thinks 'blimey, that worked!' and the scenario is repeated daily 'wow, there's that bloke coming on my property, I'd better scare him off again, oh look, there he goes, I showed him!'.

i introduced my puppy to the postman when he was young so hes like HEY not seen you in a while!

but then we got a new one who comes only a couple of days, and he got bitten by another dog, so was like KEEP THAT DOG AWAY!!! Even though I said I promised he didnt bite all he wanted to do was say hello, and I had hold! he started shouting at me!

What is it with dogs and postmen? Mine all hate ours for no reason. I would be fuming if the postie smacked one of mine but as you didn't actually see him the only thing you can do is ask and tick him off, especially as the dog was in your property and the postie had to lean over the fence to smack him!

mine love my postman - but then we always have the same one, and we live in the middle of nowhere with a really long drive down. My dogs are loose but we have introduced them to the post man and they don't bother him except to walk up and say hello. He brings treats for them. They do this with all the liveries and will do it with strangers unless I say 'who's that' in which case they stand and bark keeping strangers in their cars until I get there. great as a deterrent as we are a bit isolated. But I have heard from our postman that there are so many dogs out there that are totally out of control and so many of the postmen down here have been bitten. I can understand why the postmen run scared. So would you if everyday you were subjected to some dogs trying to attack you while you did your job. I am not condoning smacking, but I think if your dogs bounce, jump, bark at the postman then it is only fair to him that you keep them indoors until he has been. He may be scared for a legitimate reason. I suggested to mine that he carried a Tazar with him and simply zapped any dog that appears aggressive. I personally would have no problem with my dog being zapped if it was behaving in a manner which frightened the postman.

I used to carry one with me riding because we had a problem with several dogs on the way charging at fences coming through hedges etc. A zap with the tazar backs them off yelping in many cases and hopefully teaches them that a rider/horse/postman is not a sport. My parents who cycle an awful lot carry one with them when they cycle as they have both been attacked - usually by collies who chase them down the roads and bite legs.

my granddad was a postman... he reckoned he used give dogs 2 chances to be nice and become friends...then the next time if they were still trying to be nippy or jump all over him they got a smack of his sally rod(small bendy stick)...... if you want your postman to leave the dogs alone put the box somewhere he wont have to interact with the dogs to delver the post...not everone is a dog person

I think it would make the Mailman's life a great deal easier if properties with dogs had a mailbox where neither had to deal with the other.

Leaning into a property when there is no need is asking for trouble, and if I saw anyone belt my dog unnecessarily then I wouldn't be amused, if it was warranted then the dog deserves all it gets.

Like Aru says, why should a Mailman have to be responsible for making sure a dog doesn't escape and run amok (or get hurt on a road) or risk being bitten by a dog, which to be fair, is only defending his own territory? I expect my dogs to alert me to people on my property, that is their job, they are not encouraged to go bounding about all lolly tongued and waggy tailed until I say so.

Our Mailbox is across the road from the house (all boxes are on just one side of the road) and the Mail Lady never even gets out of her truck, she thinks Brits are crazy expecting the mail to be actually POSTED through a door in rural areas and not left at the end of the drive.
