Does anyone else ever feel like they have more than their fair share of bad luck?

I am sitting here feeling absolutely gutted, tears run dry, angry, sad, wronged... all of it at once...

It was confirmed today that my gorgeous 7yr old 17.1hh IDxWB mare has been diagnosed with a rare bone tumour and I'll never ride her again... she was bought having battled through the grief of losing my 16.3hh IDxWB mare who at 7yrs we discovered had paroxsymal atrial fibrillation (sudden-onset heart prob that can't be fixed)... who was bought to replace my 15.1hh Welsh D mare who at 12 yrs severed a suspensory ligament in the field....

I am SO careful with my horses, they are never over-worked, never want for anything, and are kept in the best of conditions and in a manner in which I know a lot of horses aren't...

If there is a God, he clearly has it in for me... and I wish he would turn his attentions to the people who abuse or simply don't deserve to have anything as beautiful as a horse.

Sorry to hear this, I really hope your luck changes as you sound as though you really deserve to have fun and enjoyment with you horse.

Life sucks a lot at times x

(((HUGS))) to you :( what rotten luck your having
it always seems to be the case that those who care so well for their horses have the worst luck & those that abuse them/dont look after them dont seem to have a problem (or maybe they just dont notice it)

Ah thats such a shame. I do hope things get easier for you and you get some good luck.

If its any concilation I'm having a run of bad luck too. My horse seems to have been permanitly ill since this time last year. First off he had a corneal ulcer which gave him 4 months boxrest. In April he had a reocurring eye flare up and was put on boxrest. During his stint of boxrest I noticed he has trouble with his guts. 4 months of treatment and I have the inflammation in his guts controlled by steroids. And was put back in work. Am now currently waiting to see if my insurance will pay out for a bone scan as he wont work on his right rein in trot or canter. Took him out yesterday to see if rest had done him any good and resulted in me getting my knee smacked off a metal gate while he had a pandy when asked to go forward. So will hopefullly no more this week.

And yes my posititvity has gone and I think life sucks and its def out to get me. Hope things pick up for you soon. Least you now your not going through this all alone :D x

Sympathy to you too, Oscarwild. Recommend the gamma scintigraphy bone scans; finally got to the route of the problem for my mare. What ins company are you with? I'm with NFU and they had no problem, so long as I stayed within the £5k per condition limit.

Now need to broach the subject of an £8.5k loss of use claim with them... thank god for insurance, eh?!

On the plus side, at least my girl was certified fine to be a yummy mummy and I dont have to have her pts... and I bred a gorgeous filly out of the mare with the heart condition too (it was non-hereditary and she is a nicely put-together, well-bred mare, before I get a plethora of people telling me about breeding from poor stock!) so I at least have her to look forward to in a few years time!

Me too. First horse I had for a year before he was retired due to injury, second horse I had only two months before the same happened! Finally trying once more, having a vetting done this afternoon, but I'm honestly expecting him to fail :S

You reminded me, Snickers, I had a mare who failed the vetting that I'd set my heart on before I got current (and most recently knackered) mare!!! Lol.

How did you get on today? Did it pass the vetting?

All best wishes, and thanks for making me feel less alone in my dire luck!!!

I am sorry to hear about your horse.

Isn't it weird that people who look after there horses seem to have all the problems, then there are idiots who keep them in a field full of barbed wire/old machinery, never ride them and pull them out for a gallop etc etc never have any problems! really annoys me.

Totally, completely, absolutely, cannot agree with you more!!!!!! It REALLY winds me up.

These sort of people are also the people who will just have their horse put down when it can't be ridden and is no 'use' to them.

My silver lining to all of this that at the very least I am proud that I have done the right thing, again, and that I will continue to do so until the days comes and I have to make the ultimate decision. For now I have arranged things so that my big girl can go and join my other (broken) one to be an embryo transfer recipient mare at stud.

Just proves it is so worth researching these things as to enjoy a healthy, happy 'outdoor' lifestyle with other mares, garzing on hundreds of acres, with top-notch care and supervision has to be every mare's dream...and carrying a future olympic eventer (hopefully) is a grand job. Certainly far easier than carrying me round a cross country track, trying not to lose me in a dog leg bend in a SJ round, or wondering why I tracked right and she tracked left in the dressage phase!!!

Got the specialist's report today... now just need to wait to see what the insurance company say. I hope they won't have a problem given that I have made a loss of use claim already on this policy for my other mare... within the last two years.

I suppose it is what insurance is for....
