As title says really, I recently have been in a muddle about selling my lovely little mare and came up with many reasons why I should however once I put her up for sale I found that anyone who phoned up, and some were really interested and eager, I found reasons why they shouldn't come and look at her. I feel really bad becasue I have wasted peoples phone calls but think I needed to go through this to realise whatever happens Lottie and I are stuck together for life!
My reasons for selling were that we are soon going to start trying for a family - I will just have to see how I can manage my 4 year old mare and being pregnant/ having a baby.... any advice?!

I just took the shoes of mine and turned him away. I'd saved some money from maternity pay to have him started when my baby was 3 months old. I've done this both times now and my lad has really low mileage on his clock. I couldn't bear to loan him as he was messed up when I got him and I'd spent a lot of time and money putting him right.

Get a grip girl! many horsey people out there cope with both so don't go looking for trouble, because it will soon find you.

At least you didn't let people travel miles to see her and then change your mind! It's good you have realised now, much worse to let her go and regret it for years - a good decision then.

How about finding someone to loan or share? Although that's tricky as she is presumably a bit green and you don't want someone to mess her up. But might be worth advertising, especially as we are heading for the spring and summer. There could be someone out there who is just right for you both and the help might be invaluable.

You could fall straight away or it could take a while, so I would only worry about coping once you are pregnant. Most people seem to carry on riding until it gets too uncomfortable, but it all comes down to the type of horse you have and how safe she is/will be by then - I wouldn't want to risk falling off so you have to weigh up the risks.

As for coping with a small baby, so much depends on how much help and support you have. Any grandparents nearby for regular child care? Is OH supportive of your horse habit? I've known people time their ride for child's sleep time, and they park up by the manege so they can school and watch the baby too.

Once you have got a vague routine going, you might find going off to the yard and doing your mare is a welcome relief from the daily grind of nappies and sleep deprivation! It keeps you sane and all those healthy germs must be good for small children

I think you will cope if you want and have to!

As your horse is young why not turn away at grass for now.
Or get a sharer or loan, whichever quits you best, any of those options could work.
And as has been said, at least you realised before people drove fro miles to see your horse

is there anyone on the yard your at tht wld'nt mind exercising her for you? This is what i did when a lady came to my yard pregnant, i still ride + look after him now + again along with my own horse. she cope's really well considering her baby's 3months old.

youl be fine, if youv got some good horsey friends they will help im sure, i help my YO as she has a 10 month old, i put her horses to bed twice a week. bit harsh from busty up there me thinks

just wind her down a bit and look for someone to maybe take the pressure off you in the 1st couple of months, i rode mine until i was 34ish weeks with both, & was back in the saddle 2 weeks after i'd popped, i keep him at my mums, so she does help pick up the slack, but I keep him out 24/7 and he's ridden about 5 times a week now, (i've got a 2yo & a 1yo, & a fairly busy job) but a very supportive/understanding/patient husband! it can be done, just needs some organisation & a bit of help from other people,

i have turned my 4 yr old away but have a friend on the yard who will keep her ticking over so she doesn't forget everything we have done if thats possible i would try that
